2008 RS4 not starting

Post by njp » Fri Oct 30, 2015 8:37 am

Hoping someone may be able to assist. Just picked up a 2008 Avant RS4 in great condition but I have an intermittent issue that's annoying to say the least.

On startup the car won't start, key in ignition to start or on whichever it's called and the Engine lights in the upper dash doesn't light up which means the start button doesn't function. The thing is in the four days of ownership it happened the day of pickup and then started again after 5 min, again yesterday where she wouldn't start for 2hrs I then had a new battery installed and the car started for the installer first time before he changed the battery, changed it anyway as it was old. I've also changed the key fob battery.
Locked the car up last night in the garage and then this morning no issues starting it.

Took it to the mechanic who scanned and found a low voltage code and a low key battery code but nothing else, head off to a lunch meeting and get back to the car about 2hrs later and nothing. Call roadside assist who come out and initial can't make it start. He checks voltage, that's all good, he checks the lights they work and high beam lights up no problem including the in dash symbol, the stereo works no issues as well but no engine lights or start and the windows won't open. He then hooks up the jump cables and the car starts first time.

He seemed to think it was something in the ignition circuit either a loose relay or connection but couldn't say.

So the car is now in a garage to be diagnosed but has anyone here had anything similar or any idea what may be the fault??

Apart from this issue loving the new car though...

Well, as you bought it from a dealer, id be tempted to return it. It certainly isnt normal behaviour....

Wheres his help in this? Or has he wiped his hands of it already?

He's helping. The mechanic is his. Thankfully second hand cars here from dealers come with a legal warranty for 3 or 5 months I can't remember which. So I have a loaner from the dealer or a horrid little BMW 1 series diesel at the moment.

Ah ok. Kick back and relax then, someone with more technical info may be able to give you some ideas.

Where are you based?

Yep the clutch switch isn't the issue. When it happens the car doesn't get to that stage of startup

Not sure if you had this resolved but mine did the same and it was the starter motor I think. Everything lit up like normal with the key turned and the car would start sometimes when pressing the start button straight away and sometimes it took an hour or so. It turned out to be this and since being changed its all good. This was the part no (V079 911 023 DX)

Thanks. Not sure what the issue was but they fixed it while I was away for work. Smooth sailing from here on in.
