I think the premise in the article that you could have a B7 for pretty much the same as a B8, by comparing an over-priced low mileage B7 to the B8, is flawed. There may well be the odd B7 for sale for £35k, but thats not representative. The B7 in reality is around half the price of a B8, that's hard to ignore.
So, taking the other main points, i.e. legroom and the 'box:
- I do sometimes think a bit more legroom would be handy (especially tonight when I'll be transporting a couple of mates to basketball training). It's not generous in the B7, agreed. But it's enough for my needs, if only just.
- A semi-auto box would indeed be great for town driving. I'm filling that particular gap by buying a £7k Mk5 Golf Gti DSG soon hopefully
