Gear shift issues

Post by chappardababbar » Sat Mar 14, 2015 2:57 pm

Hi, I very recently made an impulse buy of an RS4 from a forum member

Since I've had it I've picked up an issue which unfortunately I didn't pick up on the test drive : it's very difficult, often impossible to but the car into 1st and reverse... Sometimes 2nd as well. I'm not talking about a notchy shift, I mean it's not possible.

From cold, it mostly slots into 1st, 2nd and reverse straight away

Once I've been moving for some time it starts to become difficult. Pulling away from traffic lights/junctions is hard work. If there is a car behind me I have to really jam it in.

The car had a new clutch just over a year ago. I had the gear box fluid changed last week.

When I just can't get it in, I switch off the engine and it slots right into 1st, then I restart.

The car has a SUPER low biting point. Its about 1cm from the floor. I think this may be the problem I.e the clutch is not fully disengaging. I tested this on a slope, car in 1st, clutch in and the car rolled back so it seems to disengage but when I pull the gear stick out of first with clutch fully down I feel drive train shunt like I pulled it out early.

What could the problem be?

Can the clutch pedal be adjusted?

Can the clutch itself be adjusted?

Thoughts appreciated...

I think its a hydraulic operated clutch so it could be that the system needs bleeding?

Sounds like a sticky clutch issue.

Have a look on here for sticky clutch threads, brace yourself.

My one started sticking down just after I bought it and needed a new clutch, flywheel and both master and slave cylinders.

About £2000 at a good indie.

Well the clutch and flywheel were replaced by MRC, so that should not be the cause, but perhaps cylinders are the problem....
