Most of my early cars were high milers, get a good lad withe VAG experience and a keen eye to look at it with a view it maintaining it will pay dividends. Never went wrong so far
CAT D could be a train smash waiting to happen not to mention selling it on in a few years/ months down the line.

Cheers

Any RS4 is going to have high running costs regardless of age or mileage.

Buy the best car you can find for your budget, history and condition more important than low numbers on the clock.

If you find a good cat D that has only had the seats stolen then certainly worth a look but it will be harder to sell on later.

Of course a "forum" car would be the ideal, if one happens to come up.

Your Wright a forum car would be best but most are a little out of my price range

The thing to remember is that a cat d might be something like stolen seats - pretty trivial in terms of actual impact to the car (if not the wallet).
However the flip side is that if the car is badly damaged early in it's life and repaired by the insurer then there is no record anywhere that this has happened.

Which is better? As with anything you need to judge a car on it's own individual merits and take nothing for granted.

I would have no issue with a well documented cat d car - with supporting evidence of the repair and nature of the damage then there's no big worry. On cars this age there isn't going to be a net loss on resale as you'd no doubt pay less for the car up front in the first instance.

Similarly, well looked after high mileage shouldn't be an issue either with these cars.

I'm not making a recommendation either way but as a couple have said a Cat D isn't always the end of the world.

A mate had a 335d BMW worth around £22k. He drove it through a shallow ford and ingested a little water. He explained the symptoms to me and despite BMW quoting something like £17k to repair I recommended he bought the car from the insurer. If memory serves he bought the car from the insurer for £7k and it cost him around £400 to fix, new filters, MAF and a clean and that was it, he had some other non related things done at the same time but for £10k he had the car back on the road and continued to do another 60k miles in it with no issues at all before he sold it for something like £13K. 60,000 miles of free ownership in effect.

Not all Cat D's are duffers but there is a real stigma to them.

Mmmmmm - now you put it like that. I think each case on it's merits. CAT D mega crash no documented repair history, I'd walk and wait for that miler. However, partial water ingress like you say for example, especially if you are keeping the car at 7 years old (RS4 in particular) all has to be taken in to account. it's all about the type of CAT D and situation and specifics of each example and weighing up the other alternative high milers on the market at the time...

I think I may be talking myself into redacting my previous 'high milers' comment

Depends on the car imo, there's good and bad high milers and the same with cat d's. Youv'e got to buy on condition really when you go and look at a car. Im putting my car up for sale on here tonight which is cat d, but its a lovely car. Check the adverts later when i get time to post it. Thanks

The funny thing with my mates car was that there was literally no damage to any other part of the car, no flooding or interior damage, the ford was only 8 inches deep and he followed a Ford Ka through, it's just that BMW would only quote for a full brand new engine and ancillaries.
