Roof Box for RS4 Avant under 1.85m Eurotunnel limit
I've been searching the (many) threads about roof boxes for an RS4 Avant, but can't find an answer to this question:
What roof box do I need to stay under the 1.85m height limit for Eurotunnel? Ideally, one which clamps onto the Audi roof bars which I've already got.
An RS4 Avant is shown as 1.441m to the top of the OE roof rails which only leaves a bit under 41cm for the box and bars, which appears to rule out many of the Thule boxes.

dont the audi bars sit quite high off the rails? the thule or whispbar sit just above and should give another 80 ish mm , i know it means buying new bars but should give you more clearance
genuine

aftermarket

also these thule boxes are only 35cm high

Well that pic is of my old RS4!
I used to run a Kamei Corvara roof box with the Whispbar bars no problem

I think you can just go in the bus / coach bit as thats for overheight vehicles too (I thought)
i've been in there before now in a 4 x 4 which had raised suspension so would have been touch and go in the normal carriage...

Yeah I know, but I'll have my brother & sister-in-law with me and he's an ex-fireman and won't travel in the closed overheight (coach) wagons as he confuses them with the (open) lorry wagons that have been implicated as exacerbating the fires that have occurred in the tunnel.WillRS wrote:I think you can just go in the bus / coach bit as that's for overheight vehicles too (I thought).
Looks like I need to investigate the 35cm Thule box/Whispbar system - thanks Rick_RS4

Not sure if this is much help.
I have the square-section Thule roof bars and bought a Thule roofbox for skis & snowboards etc.
I didn't measure anything, but luckily it all fitted underneath the 1.85m limit anyway, just about! Maybe six inches to spare between the top of the roof box and the ceiling of the Eurotunnel carriage.
This post would be more useful if I could tell you which model of roofbox I have, but I don't have access to it at the moment.
Looking at the Thule website, I think my model is a Thule Motion with the dual-side opening.

Looks good, there's a Thule agent quite near me so I think I'll pay them a visit and see if I can persuade them to do a trial fit so I can measure the height for myself.richierobs wrote:This post would be more useful if I could tell you which model of roofbox I have, but I don't have access to it at the moment.

The Motion is 47cm tall which would be too tall if the Audi height information is correct - the Touring is 42cm, the Excellence is 40cm and the Dynamic 35cm.
Be great if you can check what model you have, when you have access to it.

just don't tell him - it will be too late once he's onboardPetrolDave wrote:Yeah I know, but I'll have my brother & sister-in-law with me and he's an ex-fireman and won't travel in the closed overheight (coach) wagons as he confuses them with the (open) lorry wagons that have been implicated as exacerbating the fires that have occurred in the tunnel.WillRS wrote:I think you can just go in the bus / coach bit as that's for overheight vehicles too (I thought).

You don't know my brother as well as I doWillRS wrote:just don't tell him - it will be too late once he's onboard![]()

I know that's why we always use the tunnel - except when it was closed after the last fire when we had to use a ferry, which my wife absolutely hated (she can get seasick when the sea is mirror-like flat).WillRS wrote:only been 3 fires I think since 1994 so not like its a regular occurrence...
