* Talking with someone more mechanically minded (I know jack), issues were raised that the higher sitting cooler position of the Forge cooler means the oil can/will drain from it when engine is off. Is that a potential problem ? I note Forge make a point of the higher position to reduce risk of road debris damage, but that isn't much of a consideration for me
i cant see the position of the forge oil cooler regarding oil draining being a problem.
i would be more concerned with it blocking flow over the main rad, probs not a problem for those of us in the uk with our temps but if you have the cold air feed and have already deleted one of your aux rads then on a hot day and if your giving it some this could start to add up. i would rather they used a similar size and shape to the oem cooler and kept it in its original position.
as for forge placing the oil cooler further up to minimize road debris damage i dont think they had a choice it simply would not have fitted in the oem location.

* Does the change of the oil cooler achieve much ? The main issue with the Audi bits being the mixed metal (aluminium/steel) corrosion at the joints, rather than the performance of the oil cooler itself. With that in mind, does just using alternative hoses with matched metal connectors to an OEM oil cooler solve the problem? I'd prefer to stick as stock as possible when it comes to replacements.
the "upgraded cooler" will offer no cooling benefits over oem, supercharged cars making 600+ bhp run the oem cooler with zero oil temp problems.
the problem like you say is the oem hoses with steel fittings, unfortunately its not going to be easy to make up your own set of pipes because of the non standard fitting audi use where the oil pipes connect to the block. the only people that are making an upgraded set of pipes with the correct fittings are jhm.

I recognise the fact that I'm likely to have to replace the oil cooler being the difficulty in taking apart the corroded coupling. Though an independent more likely to give it a go with careful cutting of hoses whilst protecting threads, which is not in Audi dealer's interest to bother with.
Any comments?
plenty on here have struggled removing the old pipes, when i do mine i think i will cut the pipe and thread straight off and weld new threads on to the cooler body. someone on here has already done this as the threads were to badly corroded/damaged by the time the steel fittings had been cut off.
and i think its worth mentioning that everyone who has had the forge kit fitted seems to be suffering from some weird rpm related harmonics vibration issue, which is causing an audible whine when reving the engine.
