I've just got my b7 rs4 and love it got a few questions about the head unit, it's got 2 sd card slots so I guess this is the later model? It also has the cd changer in the glovebox
I want to bin the changer and have a USB hdd to replace it, how do I do this?
I also want to be able to stream Bluetooth audio from my iphone, again how do I do this?

I am pretty sure (99%) that you would need the 2010 RNS-E + AMI fitted to achieve this trick although there may be work arounds now. Best bet is to ask a firm called HazyDays who seem to specialise in this sort of thing then decide if worth doing I think.

The older unit (the one that was an OEM option in the B7 RS4) also has 2 SD card slots so that doesn't necessairly mean you have a later unit.

The 2nd button from the left at the bottom is normally the easiest way to tell the difference between the original and the 2010+ units; if it says CD/TV it is most likely you have a pre 2010 unit, if it says MEDIA then it is most likely to be a 2010+ unit.

Then you have the older type that will take up to 4GB SD cards but only if they are not SDHC (which are quite hard to get hold of now).
Not 100% sure if there is any way to get a USB input onto this older unit but I thought I read a way of doing by sacrificing the CD changer. If you swap it for a 2010+ unit then it is easy and you also get to use SDHC cards giving you up to 32GB in each slot (although you'd probably hit the maximum file numbers before you fill up a 32GB card).
I've also read varying stories about maximum file numbers on a USB drive with the 2010+ units. PetrolDave has this set-up and I'm sure will be along any minute now.

Only way of getting HDD into the RNSe is via swapping to the later 193 spec head unit (i.e. the '2010+' model) plus the AMI in place of the CD changer. All in you're probably looking at a little over £800 if you do it all yourself for RNSe + AMI + an HDD. If you then sell the old RNSe and CD changer I'd guess you'll get around £300 tops back on ebay, so around £500 net cost.

This was the first mod I did, I binned the STD RNS-E and swapped it for one from a TT RS [but kept the original surround] - I also installed the Audi Music Interface [AMI] in the glovebox at the same time. I run either a HDD or a Bluetooth dongle. The BT dongle allows audio streaming from your device - I used a iPhone and stream internet radio over 3g to the AMI/RNS-E or audio files stored on the phone or a HDD for higher quality audio.

It is by far the best mod I have done to my car - alternatively, with the newer RNS-E [2010+ version]- It supports 2 x 64GB SD cards which is more than enough for some.

If you go down the AMI route, not only does it support BT audio streaming or HDD connection it also provides a full track/playlist support as well as a proper folder view for browsing your BT or HDD music collection.

The sound of the V8 is all well and good but when you're sitting in traffic you'd look a bit of a <beep> with the revs at 6000rpm.

I don't know anyone that has found the limit on a USB drive connected via AMI - Audi sell 500GB drives so if there is a limit is must be huge!

I fitted a 2010+ RNS-E from an A3 (fitted with an A4 faceplate) three years ago and initially loved being able to have "only" 64GB of music on 2 SDHC cards, but since I replaced the CD changer with AMI a couple of years ago I've used a 250GB HDD with my entire music collection.

I finally got an SDS version of the later 193 RNSe this week and did the faceplate swap over yesterday. When hooked up the first thing I noticed was 'this is nice and fast' when flicking through the MP3's.

In the swap over I utilised the original black rotary selection dial and volume knob, but the movement action isn't as nice as the new chrome selection dial which has a softened clunk rather than the original clicky action. Does anyone know if the chrome dial can be separated from the PCB, as it would save me time taking apart the units again to find out?
