Newbe says Hi & seeks advice on buying

Post by Bomb_Doctor » Tue Sep 03, 2013 11:37 am

Good day to you all :)

I've been lurking for a while now whilst searching for the right car...I think I may have found it - 06 Avant. I've read the sticky on buying. I'm new to Audi having had a varied car career so far...but including Marcos LM500 & Monaro. Living in the South Midlands area.

I took the Avant for a test drive the other day and noticed a couple of things...

1. A bit smokey on start up - dark sooty smoke.
2. Ran quite rough until about 10 minutes into the drive.
3. The front discs had a pronounced lip on the outer edge. Guessing they're worn...but what is acceptable?

Any ideas/views??

As S4WON has said probably best to move on with the dark sooty smoke at start up.

But if you are still interested the front Disks start at 34mm and min tollerance per Audi is 32mm

Try and buy from a forum member if at all possible. that way you know it has more chance of being looked after by an enthusiast

good luck with the search

Thanks for the replies..... My ideal car would be a 07 plate (Avant), Daytona grey with as much spec as possible, with the lowest miles.....for circa £21k :)

Any ideas what the smokey start up could be a sign of? It comes with 12 months RAC warranty ;)

Has it been modified? Mine gives a puff of smoke when cold as it has no pre cats.

I wonder what SW release it is on as it could maybe have missed up the recalls as I think 0090 was for smoky start up ? I do agree though if it is below going rate then there could well be a reason & a bargain now could easily become a nightmare later when you find the warranty isn't quite as comprehensive as you first hoped...

SW0090 was never a recall, it was on owner request only and even then only if you "gave the right answers"- and some Audi dealers said (still say) that there's no such thing as SW 0090 :audibash:

FYI Removal of precats will give a puff of dark grey smoke on start. Post warm up to 70c and then the first 8000rpm pull will smoke also at gear change after that no smoke at all.

They do smoke from cold if they've been pootling around a lot,and Defoe do when running sports or no cat down pipes, they also run rough from cold until fully warmed through, worse if cheap low octane fuel is used, lipped discs wouldn't put me off a straight decent car just make sure it's factored into the purchase price,I'd be more concerned with knackered side bolsters and crash damage as you ain't sortin these afterwards easily.

Mine smokes a fair bit and doesn't have a molecule of carbon in the manifold :) No precats though.

Look at a few & you will soon get to tell a good un from a potentially bad one.
