In order of cost, I reckon:

Tie the exhaust flaps open (disconnect and plug vacuum pipes)
Get a custom back box fabricated (no guarantee of sound quality tho)
MRC centre resonator delete
Milltek catback
AWE Tuning catback
Tubi back box
Capristo catback

There's no doubt others, and I'm sure more guys will add to the list :)

Disconnecting the exhaust flaps costs nothing, takes about 5 minutes to do with nothing required other than a couple of cable ties, a couple of screws, a screwdriver and wire cutters. You don't even need to jack the car up, I did it laying on the floor with the car on the ground. In fact you could try it out first with no tools and about 20 secs by just pulling the hoses off and starting the car! Excellent mod! Makes a fair difference too.

Not quite the sound of the V8 but I think a cone type air filter makes a massive difference and one that should be looked at before making the exhaust noisier otherwise it just drowns out the lovely induction roar that you get.

thanks RS4-AL

is the MRC centre resonator delete the same as an x-pipe crossover in place of the resonators ?

ive just been reading about that and it sounds perfect ? :-)

exhaust, downpipes, manifold, induction kit, remap, and then finally resonator pipe. But it's <beep> loud with the rest of this.

But it's very expensive, sounds lovely though

Wouldn't just pulling the vacuum hoses off the valves just mess up the whole vacuum system?

I'm planning gutted pre-cats and then x-pipe centre res delete, stock back boxes. And cone filter for sooooooook.

Yes, but you just plug the hose end with a screw...

For sound, I'd say by far the best value mod is to delete the resonators. Cost me £160 iirc to have the resonators taken out and a crossover fitted with flanges added to both so they can be swapped back in future.

Edit: what I'd do in hindsight, tho, is buy something like the ECS h-pipe (i.e something good quality) and then have it fitted by exhaust Shop - prob wouldn't cost that much more tbh and is a more elegant solution. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZQdYGJCCxk

Yes that's why I said you could just pull them off to hear the sound difference. If you like it plug the ends with a screw and cable tie them up safely. Forgot to mention before though, best cover the ends of the exhaust valves too to stop any dirt getting in. If you don't like it then just put it back as it was, but once you try it you won't be putting it back. can;t be beat for a cheap sound mod.

If it's anything like the ecs hope (resonator replaced with an h) it's marginally rumblier and a little more poppy and crackly on rundown.

Precat delete added to that turns the volume up a good bit. If stock is 100, the res delete is 120 and the piggies plus resdelete is 140

Other aftermarket exhausts range from 150-250.

Here is res delete vs stock...my car is the silver one (stock).
