My oil breather pipes are well rusty and are being replaced at the mo, along with a new oil cooler my cars done 50k now and I would say there is going to be a lot more cars suffering the same fate, so check your pipes

Breather pipes?

Thought it was the oil cooler pipework suffering terminal rust around the crimp sleeves that hold the end fittings on. Mine were done 6k miles ago at 45k. Cooler and feed/return pipes replaced by Audi for previous owner.

Worth checking regularly though. If one let go properly during a 'spirited' drive you'd have a very good chance of lunching the engine before you cotton on to the problem

Cheers, :beerchug:

First sign of oil cooler pipe failure when driving is that your dash will light up like a christmas tree if it does so, pull over asap and switch off.

Im working in Belgium at the moment, came out of a shopping centre to see someone pointing at a large pool of oil under my car. Got it back and stripped myself to find the oil cooler pipes destroyed with rust.
Personally I cant understand how this is acceptable.... its a disgrace for a car like this.
Of corse as experienced by many others on here, its almost impossible to remove the hoses from the cooler without destroying the threads. Hence a 4 day wait and 800eur bill from local Audi garage here!

When i find out how to post pics i will....

Mine failed within 2 years. I think I was the first to report the issue back in 2009. At the time it was just a small oil leak, spotting drops where the car had been parked

I really must pull my finger out to inspect and grease up the lines again. What are peoples views on wrapping them with denso tape? I've not looked so not sure how much needs wrapped or just the fittings at the end.

Mine has done circa 50k and the oil cooler pipes were very rusty, i wire brushed and coated them with 3 generous brush coats of hammerite, think i have got away with it :sekret:

I may inspect and greese them before heavy winter too as that was a few monthes ago.

+1 for the bad quality steel/finish by Audi :audibash:

Just got my car back, not a cheap job!! Like what has been said it is very very difficult to cut the pipes free from the oil cooler without ruining the threads, bad bad design from Audi, one I would check out if you have not looked before, been a very busy day forget to get mechanic to take photos

+1, advice please. Mine's done 56k now so would appear to be in the danger zone, although no signs of leaks etc at the moment.

When looking at the pipes on my car it was up in the air on a ramp with the cover under the engine removed, you will be able to see the pipes going to the oil cooler which is behind the front bumper, to remove the oil cooler the bumper has to be removed, sorry not the best explanation I know :biggrin2:
