Wrapping trim??

Post by RS6chris! » Wed Oct 10, 2012 6:32 pm

Hi guys,

I'm posting on the B7 forum because it is the most active these days.

Does anyone know whether the likes of mirrors, window trim and even roof rails can be wrapped? And if so what type of quality are we looking at?

I want to get the front grill done gloss black on my RS6....but also I'm thinking of going titanium look on window trims and mirrors...even roof rails?? Is it do able or are the curves on certain trim pieces to much to get a quality job??

Any advice welcome...and if any one knows of anywhere in the north east that's a bonus!!!

Amy pics also welcome!!

Thanks again boys.

Chris.

I have had lots of bits wrapped over the years on other cars i have owned inside and out and the guy who did mine did a great job and i never had a problem with peeling or any other nasties (although i don't keep me cars to long) So i would think as long as you go to a recommended place i would say you will have no probs, :beerchug:

Mate, just got the wife's new MX-5 wrapped - roof in carbon and mirrors in vinyl with stickm http://www.stickym.com/

They are lovely guys, near Stratford-upon-Avon but were awesome. You pay for what you get and they are a little bit more than normal. Roof + mirrors approx. £300 but the workmanship took 4 hrs and is outstanding. The quality - it looks like a real carbon roof and will last 5+ years apparently. Not really north east though, sorry.

I've wrapped the front grill on mine with gloss black vinyl. Bit of hassle, since to do it properly you have to remove the bumper and then the grill and then the grill surround. Looks good now though, indistinguishable from black optic grill really. I'll try and get a photo done and uploaded. I started doing the window trim but gave up as it's incredibly fiddly without removing the trim parts (and if you're going to do that you might as well replace them). You end up getting creases/folds where the window trims end because you can't tuck the vinyl underneath which ends up looking really messy and will inevitably start to peel. None of the wrapping places I contacted were interested in doing trim (too small a job), so I did it myself and bought some good vinyl (must be car wrap vinyl, not sign-writing vinyl!) off ebay.

I'm not that bothered about window trim now in silver tbh, but if I was, I think I'd probably spray it matt black but do it "properly" by sanding it to rough it up, then priming, then painting and then satin laquer.

Hi Chris, have a chat with Golfather as he has had his C6 done and it looks really good. I had a look over it last weekend and the quality is very good, you couldn't really tell that it had been wrapped. Having seen it I would recommend it over painting as you can obviously remove and you don't have to take the items off in the first place.

Can't remember where he had it done but give him a shout and I'm sure he will pass on the info :beerchug:

I've had my window surrounds and the front grill trim wrapped in matte black and it looks excellent.. Would never tell it was wrapped.

Is the issue with wrapping that once you want it off its effected the surrounds?

It's worth pointing out the Alu bits are very easily corroded. Wrapping might make it worse

I can't see how wrapping will make it worse, if anything it should protect them from the atmosphere.

Wrapping trim??

Post by doodlebug » Thu Oct 11, 2012 10:46 pm

I have to say I'm puzzled by the wrapping craze.

I've seen the result of applying vinyls to somewhat bigger objects in the form of trains, both alu and steel bodies. It's a complete ball ache. It age and UV hardens, and fades, it becomes completely impossible to remove without heat and scraping. Add to that it can reveal horrendous corrosion underneath. Remember if there's a tiny defect in the paintwork and you trap a little bit of moisture in you are screwed.

There's no fecking way I'm wrapping anything other than the odd Christmas present.
