New tyres fitted, rubbing on bumps

Post by Awd4 » Sat May 19, 2012 3:36 pm

Just fitted 4 new Michelin PS2 on wednesday and the tyres are rubbing inside the arches when I drove down a slightly bumpy back road which i use everyday, I wasn't too fast, it never did that with Pzeros or contisports. Exact same size fitted each time. Any clues as to why this happens? Thanks :)

mine did the same, I have 8 mm on the front
the Michelin have a very square shoulder, it is probably hitting a little clip top dead center that retains the fender liner
I filed mine down, some remove them

Thanks a million for your answers, the guys that fitted the tyres and did the track don't mind having a look again, I'll bring the car to them next week. If it only happens on bumpy roads, I can live with it, I think. As long as it doesn't do any damages?
It looks too good with the 10mm at the rear and 8mm at the front :)
Hi Edge, yes well have to catch up soon, and good luck with MRC :)

Are they definately rubbing?

My car would give a "brushing" noise if pressing on over heavily undulating road. I asked the tyre company if there was any signs of rubbing after fitting the 275 ratio tyres. They told me it was the vertical plastic strip at the back of the front spoiler catching the ground on full suspension movement

It's defo the tyres rubbing, she never did that noise before and it comes from the rear arches.

Hello mate - hope all well.

Is it just the fronts ? I had GY Assym2's fitted a couple of months ago which have a huge rim protector and I have not had any problems though I only have spacers on the rear. I am lowered a little too.

Worth checking that the new tyres are 'RO1' fitment, which are for Audi 'S' and 'RS' models. These are the recommended fitment, as the sidewall is a slightly different profile to ensure the tyres don't foul the wheelarches, although I know many people have fitted tyres of the correct size that are not 'RO1' with no problems. I have some correspondence from Michelin which outlines the difference in the tyres (i.e. RO1 and non RO1) as the significance of the RO1 intrigued me when I was replacing mine last year. I understand that's why only Pirelli P Zero Rossos, Continentals and Michelins (who were the only manufacturers of 'RO1' tyres) were ever fitted to RS4's from the factory....
Without sounding like an anorak, the A3 for example could be supplied new with Hankook tyres, which are not generally considered to be the best tyre (although OK), but the ones fitted to Audis were marked with 'AO', which was 'Audi Only', which presumably indicated that the tyres were different - possibly made to a better standard, I don't know. Tyres made specifically for certain Mercedes models were marked 'MO', and I'm sure there are others.

Indeed, that's quite interesting, do you know where I should be looking for the RO1 mention?
I didn't get a chance to bring her back yet, but I went to the airport early Monday morning ;) and it rubbed at each bumps on my back road at healthy speed. It is mainly the rear tyres.

Sorry for not responding sooner, but been to Disneyland in Paris! Fantastic, by the way!
Michelin, Pirelli and Continental tyres that are 'RO1' fitment are clearly marked with this on the sidewall. As I have the Michelins on mine, I have checked them and it is positioned under the 'Pilot Sport' in quite large print.
