New Arrival - Audi uk result

Post by Graeme4130 » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:27 pm

Hi All
Well, I picked my 2007 RS4 Avant up from Audi on Thursday so i thought I'd share my first impressions on the car on here.
This was the Audi photo of the car, and the only change I asked for was to paint the mirrors silver, reset the bumper and change the tyres before I picked it up.

This is a few poor quality pics of the car now in my possession (i'll get some decent photo's of it next week when I remember to bring my decent camera back from work)

First impressions ;
The car came from Harrogate Audi, but as I'm in Swindon it was going to be a long ol' trek back up there to pick it up, so the dealer we kind enough to meet me halfway at the Sytner HQ in Leicester where they collected my PX car and I completed the Audi paperwork, paid them the difference and took the car home. The guy from the dealer was incredibly helpful and didn't mind me calling him about 5 times a day with various questions about Clutchs, discs and DRC / coil replacement history. I would certainly recommend them.
To say I was like an excited school kid on the way up would be understatement. Now I've had a few fast cars before and this RS4 wouldn't be my fastest ever car, but there's been something special about the B7 Avants ever since I first saw the Show car in 2005.
The car was exactly as I expected and I was certainly not disappointed with the way it performed once I'd got a bit more used to it over a couple of hundred miles.
I have a TVR which is a Summer weekend toy, but the delivery of the power from the Two V8 engines couldn't be any more different.
The Audi needs revving, but when you do that last little kick up towards the rev limited is fantastic, whereas in the TVR you almost feel sorry for the engine revving it as you get a huge dollop of torque very low down. It makes for a much more rewarding experience in the Audi and the Nascar sound is a real treat from the drivers seat. In fact, I spent a lot of the journey with the window down listening to various rev ranges and loads.
I was very pleasantly surprised at how good a motorway cruiser it is. Sure the 6th gear is fairly low and could do with a few hundred RPM/10MPH ratio in it, but the sound isn't intrusive when you're cruising along between 75-90ish and my kids and mrs seem to like it for getting around in.
When I first found this car, as I mentioned earlier, the only thing I really wanted changing was the black mirrors to Sliver, and despite only getting a couple of days to do it the dealer made a great job of removing and painting them. The other slight concern I had with the spec was that it had a multi Function wheel rather than the Flat bottomed wheel. I've actually taken quite a liking to the MFSW, so at least there's no need to try and find around £600 for the FBSW. The telephone and voice activation function is very god and once I fathomed out all the voice activation key words, it's as good a system as I've had in previous cars, if not better.
There's a couple of minor frustrations, firstly my car has the Sat Nav system which is great and quite easy use (even in comparison to the touch screen one I had in a recent car), but not the CD multichanger, so I can't listen to a CD and use the Sat nav at the same time which is a pain.
I does however have a Ipod doc in the glove box, but I don't want to have my iphone in the glove box as I like to be able to see who's texted me etc on the move (not of course to read them whilst driving) The phone is linked into the Handsfree kit with bluetooth, so I can't imagine it's rocket science to have it connect into the music system to play songs through the same route or at least have the Ipod doc in the armrest where the big bulky phone prep unit it (what phone's that for anyway, as I've not seen a phone that size since they were part of a briefcase  )
The dealer did say they could wire it into the arm rest, but it's a specific Audi kit and it's not cheap, so I've opted to get an auto electrician friend of mine to run an apple extension lead (male to female - 2m @ £8.99 from ebay) from the inside of the glovebox, into the transimission center console and up into the back of the centre armrest where my phone will sit and charge yet still play music.
In the meantime I've just put all my music on an SD card, so all sorted there.
Generally, I'm very impressed with the car. The kids like it, I've had nothing but positive comments on it in petrol stations and outside shops and I like the fact that those not in the know just think it's a black Audi estate, whereas those that do know, know it's a very capable car.
If anyone's interested, then when Audi took the car in as a PX the previous owner had just had it fitted with a new set of Vredestein Wintrak Extreme 255/35/19 Winter / Snow tyres ;
http://www.camskill.co.uk/m98b423s2804p ... 35_35_R_19

I opted to fit PZero corsa's on it as I've had them in the past, so know they're decent rubber.
The winter tyres had been only used for approx 200miles, so are virtually wear free and are now in a stack wrapped up in my garage, so if anyone wants to offer me a few quid for them, then a set of virtually new winter tyres can be theirs for not much outlay ?

Funnily enough, I'm starting to think my TVR's maybe not going to get the use this summer that it's enjoyed previously as the Audi seems to have stolen all my attention. But we'll wait and see. Maybe I need to trade the TVR in for an Atom which is a scratch I'll certainly need to itch one day.

Anyway, so far is certainly so good with the RS4 and as I'm planning on keeping it a while, I'll keep this updated with progress..

Graeme - a happy RS4 owner :blackrs4:

I would have kept your winter tyres on until march april time because they are good winter tyres and then swapped over to summer tyres. You should be able to use your cd changer with the sat nav at the same time. Welcome and enjoy your new toy.

He has an iPod dock in the glovebox, so the DVD drive is the only choice for CDs so has to remove the map DVD to play an audio CD.

Your car seems to be missing the engine cover on the right hand side so I would chase Audi up for that as you have just bought the car.

Congrats on your RS4 purchase Graeme!

If you look on the row of buttons beneath the screen, the right hand button looks like a square with an arrow... if you push this, the screen will move itself forward, revealing 2 SD card slots. You can use these with cards up to 4GB (but they must be SD only not SDHC cards) and put a bunch of MP3 files on them. I think the RNS-E system will only tolerate a maximum of something like 512 objects per card (objects include the MP3 files themselves, folders or playlist files) and the sound is decent enough. My RS4 has the factory iPod kit and I've used it once... it simulates 5 CDs. I decided early on it wasn't worth the effort and use the SD cards instead.

Anyhow, all that talk is heresy.. you really want to wind the window down and give it some beans, that be fine music right there :D

Unfortunately the phone connection is low bandwidth mono so even if you could play your music through it (you can't) it would sound dreadful.

As others have said the best way to play music using the sat nav is by using SD cards (note SD and NOT SDHC cards).

Oh ok, that's exposed my very limited knowledge of phone tech ! :biggrin2:
I don't think running a wire out of the glovebox and through the transmission console to the armrest is going to be adifficulty job, so that should sort that, as said, I've put my music on an SD card in the meantime, so I'm not just stuck with the radio or no sat nav.

Had a nice afternoon blast on some of my favourite country roads today. The roads were really greasy, but the depth of the Audi's ability is huge.. I've got a big grin now, I'm certainly happy I made the right choice.

Also, had someone else come up to me today in a car park and compliment the car. Although I've had some OK cars before, I've never seen this much positive attention, even in my TVR (funnily enough, someone referred to me as a c@@t for no reason not so long ago when I pulled up outside a Shop in an E60 M5 :knob: )

It's a chimaera I have - a 95 4.0HC in Jaguar Kingsfisher blue (read as green !)
It's a great fun car, and if you classify fun as loud V8 noise, surplus of power and not enough rear grip, then it absolutely ticks all the boxes.
Tuscans are a lovely car, but I was always after the V8 noise and something my limited mechanical ability can deal with.
The Audi in undoubtedly faster, but the TVR makes you feel a bit more alive and there's no relaxing when pushing on like there is in the RS

Re: New Arrival - First Impressions & clutch concern ?

Post by Graeme4130 » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:59 pm

One thing that raised itself tonight, and I'm not sure if it's something or not, is that it's quite hard to make a smooth gear change between the lower gears when cruising around in traffic.
It seems the clutch doesn't declutch smoothly unless I'm really very slow with the pedal.
The car is an Audi approved used car, so they claim that it has plenty of clutch wear left on it, but seeing as they missed the non working iPod doc and missing engine cover, I'm not perhaps convinced they've checked it properly
The car's going in for iPod Docking fix and engine cover Monday at Audi Swindon, so if this is a worn clutch then I'll get them to do that at the same time.
Cheers
Graeme

1st 2nd 3rd is tricky on all the V8 manuals, I've missed 2nd 3rd a few times lately with the cold weather and stiff gearbox, 1st 2nd is almost impossible to change up smoothly even when fully up to temperature.

Whats your mileage - 54,649? My clutch and dual mass flywheel was done at 63000, and I've heard of S4s and RS4s going in earlier than that..........

Oh ok, I'm glad it's not just mine then
Yeah, 54649 is right, so it likely that the clutch is on the last legs anyway of its not already been changed. I can ask Swindon Audi to check the system to see if/when
Audi do claim that the clutch has plenty of wear on it on all cars through the approved used scheme, so I may have reasonable claim for them to change it if it hasn't been done already.
To be honest, I'd just assumed that they'd have checked everything over In detail, but as they've missed a plastic panel off the engine and the other minor issues, I'm not so convinced any more
I'll go around and make a full check of everything myself today just for peace of mind
On the Sbutton, then I should notice the exhaust valves opening at the back from the vacuum and also both drivers and passenger seats inflating or just drivers side ?
Only seems to inflate driver aside, and I had to activate this as was turned off on the dash options
Is drivers side only normal ? Passenger side upper and lower bolsters inflate ok by using the buttons on the side of the seat
Cheers
Graeme

Graeme, I'd be surprised if the clutch was covered at that mileage regardless of warranty, it's classed as a wear and tear item and as such would be exempt. A friend of mine had an A6 which had the same issue but he had only covered 38k, it was replaced under good will but only after a fight!

I've had lots of cars, BMW, Porsche, Range Rover etc and I'm finding that Audi are the worst for trying to weezle out of warranty claims! When I had my M5 and it went in for a service just before it's 3rd birthday I picked it up only to just be told I had had thousands of pounds of stuff done FOC on the warranty. This included a corroded rear alloy I hadn't noticed and the illuminated M5 kick plates which I didn't know illuminated!

Now that is customer service :bigblink:

I shouldve explained that a bit better - I wasn't assuming that it'd be covered by warranty. However, Audi market that all approved used cars go though certain checks and that they are supplied with plenty of wear left on consumable items such as brake discs, pads, tyres and clutches
I only picked the car up three days ago, so if the car's been supplied with a dying clutch, then I'd hope I'd have reasonable claim for them to change it... I hope ?

As i understand it an approved used car should have no major outlay required for at least a year.Usually it comes down to pushing hard to get a fair outcome. My pal has just started on the same job as me and come up in his RS4 as he uses it as a daily,im taking it out for a drive as soon as hes fixed the blowout he had last night as he also is complaining of difficult shifts, his has done over 60k and had a new clutch though not long ago i will see how it feels compared to mine.I was talking to a german friend about this last night whos well up on vag stuff and says changing the gearbox oil is highly recommended over here in germany, but when ive asked at home it seems they never bother and its seen as sealed for life, its does make sense and my mate might end up having it done later this week when his car goes in for service so will keep you posted
