Engine out!!!!!!!!
Engine out!!!!!!!!
Hi just wondered if anyone has come across this problem. I have a 2006 b7 rs4 with 40k on the clock and my engine management light came on just before christmas, I got the computer on it and it says that the inlet cam timing over advanced bank 2. I put it into highland audi and they have quoted me 5 grand to remove the engine replace the timing chains campulleys etc. They have never come across this before has anyone? I tried flushing the engine oil etc cleared the codes and it comes back every 3 starting cycles.
Has anyone got any advice? My friend owns a garage and would do the job for less than half the price. Not sure what to do though? Oh and to top it all off audi told me that my drc is leaking and i need 2 front shocks lol typical any advice greately recieved.;

Re: Engine out!!!!!!!!
haven't heard an RS4 doing it, but other similar set-ups chain driven cams with timing/phase adjusting mechanism
sounds like the chain jumped a tooth or 2 on the sprocket
usually happens due to a mechanical over-rev or bad tensioners
the engine must be pulled, and once out and opened up and you might as well do the tensioners
they must feel the chain is stretched and the sprocket teeth are damaged too, not sure how they would know that without having it pulled and opened up though...but honestly, if not damaged it could just be mechanically times...but in the overall cost of the work, the chain/sprocket are very little
most is labor

Re: Engine out!!!!!!!!
Quoted 2800 for parts alone mate. Engine drives fine no noises or anything just a nightmare to have to pull it to find out.
Re: Engine out!!!!!!!!
did they give a quote with part numbers? scan it in?
must be more than chains/sprockets, maybe the adjustment mechanisms too
how long has it being doing it?
does it still make good power, rev to 8000?
what is your mpg like?
I'm not sure how they determined the solution, just to replace all that stuff without seeing it, especially since they said they 'have never seen it before'?
I'd take it to someone else for a second opinion, although with dealers they punch the vin/estimate in, so I'm pretty sure other dealers can see it, if you get my drift...
what is the exact code?
did they note any over'revs?
my e46 M3 had a toothed sprocket on the cam that the sensor 'counted' to determine position, it could slip, a sensor could go bad, etc.
I would be making my case that an engine with 40k should not suffer a mechanical failure if operated within its design limits, good will gesture, etc.

Re: Engine out!!!!!!!!
How does the variable valve mech work on rs4 engine? Wonder if that's gone wonky...
Agree with Arthur though the most likely cause is a failed tensioner and a jumped timing chain. Maybe it's running ok 'cause the variable valve bit is compensating(?) - again I don't know enough about this mech to be sure.
Unfortunately the only way is to pull the engine and see what's happened.
Is there any rattling type noise at idle?
Do you have the exact failure code?
You may be lucky in that it's the sensor gone bad - I don't know where the cam sensors are though.

Re: Engine out!!!!!!!!
Hi the engine runs fine sometimes you can feel a small miss while cold but other than that still revs the same etc the code is p0021. I spoke to a few dealerships now and audi uk and because i bought it outside the audi network they wont help. Highland audi said they might do something due to the low miles but it would be a max of 30% goodwill which is still a lot of money for a 40k miles car!!!!!
i checked the cam sensors myself by changing them around from bank 1 to bank 2 still gave the same code so sensor is fine. They gave me 4 pages of part numbers right down to o rings 30p each lol.
THERE IS A COMPANY ON EBAY OFFERING TO SUPPLY AND FIT A RECON ENGINE FOR 3500 sorry about the caps just got over excited there. Oh highland audi are only charging 75 + vat an hour so 30 + hours in labour and 2800 in parts not bad had the car a year and done 2k in it as i work away lol.

Re: Engine out!!!!!!!!
Small miss when cold is fine.
Ok - found this. It's for an s4 but fundamentally the same thing.

From my reading elsewhere a slipped timing chain would be causing many codes and misfire.
If you've only got a p0021 then this could be the cam advance mechanism.
From the above link it can be tested and diagnosed with Vag Com so worth doing before engine out.

Audi ran those tests so know the issue, hence the replacement parts
the system is not unlike vanos, oil pressure regulated by a solenoid rotates a twisted splined gear, using a hydraulic actuator (diaphram type?), on the cam to <beep>/advance phasing
