Yes a manager & collegue at Halfords (met through the IAM) told me pretty much the same. WD40 is really a cleaning agent more than a lubricant,

It's not all bad - wd40 is great at many things. V useful to stop corrosion if not using the car for a while say over winter. Spray over the discs and they won't rust or stick. Granted you need to remember as the first time you use the car you really won't have any brakes (I generally write a note on the steering wheel) :)
Also excellent degreaser and works well on wheels to make future cleaning easier.
