Warning ! - Oil Cooler & Pipes

Post by RSsJs » Sat Nov 20, 2010 6:53 pm

This week oil pressure light came on briefly during a short trip during the day.

Inspection of pool of fluid where I park at work proved to be oil!

Checked oil level - v.low phoned green flag and had car flat bedded to my local dealer (Tyneside Audi -Silverlink).

Diagnosis of problem - oil pipe split hence oil dumped and also union with oil cooler corroded.

New oil cooler and pipes circa £1200!!!!!

My car is 2 months out of warranty and having read threads on here about corrosion issues thought that this should be taken up by the dealer with Audi.

To be clear the service campaign 17D7 - is only to put some clips around the hoses to stop them possibly rubbing and this had been carried out in Feb'10 It is nothing to do with possible corrosion issues!!!!!

Audi's response was to offer no assistance or goodwill gesture - very disappointed as I would not expect to have any corrosion issues after only just over 3 years and 27k miles.

I am now going to follow this up with Audi Customer Services as this is not what I expected having spent £50k on their car!

However credit where it is due I have spoken to Steve, the Service Manager, extensively about the issue and like me he feels disappointed with Audi's response and generously offered a 50% dealership goodwill gesture towards the costs and is actively going to pursue the issue with Audi (to try and obtain all costs).

I will keep you updated as this progresses.

My real point was that this could have been disastrous and clearly seems to be an issue that may be on many cars.

My advice get this checked ASAP and don't expect that the service campaign covers it.

I hope this may be of use to other owners and I would like to say that I was very happy with the service from Audi Tyneside and I would happily recommend them based on this experience.

Sounds like Tyneside have stepped up their customer service a bit then..... Can't say I've been overly impressed in the past. Anyway....
Corrosion is definitely an issue, noticed the start of it on mine and now liberally grease the area when the undertray is off for oil changes. Poor design at the end of the day. What's the anti corrosion warranty on the car? Any scope for applying it to engine part failures!?

Funnily you should mention that I replaced my cooler/pipes last month as they was starting to look corroded even though my car too had the recent 17D7 service campaign.

OK has your car been serviced by Audi UK, is your car still withing the Audi service interval. i.e. Not out of service. If answer is YES, then you have a very good case for the goodwill gesture. They should have notified you that the pipes was corroding when conducting the 17d7 SC. Take it all the way.

Went to view a car the other week, had suffered a bottom end failure, I saw the warranty claim invoice was about 11k  ...maybe this had suffered a fate along these lines.

Yes, car has been serviced by Audi UK and is still within the Audi Service interval, although I did get it serviced by MRC when they carried their work but the service was not required but thought it worth doing as needed MOT anyway.

Brought up issue about whether it should have been picked up when carrying out 17D7 but was told it was not that particular union that was the corroded one.

Will keep you updated but would hate to think of what could have happened if I had been on a longer journey!

Is the MRC work stamped in the service book? if so they may use this as a excuse not to cough up.

Good luck with this, there is no way you should have to deal with this on a 50k car
