SW0040 came on the 2005/2006 models and SW0030 came on the De-restricted models. I jumped from 0040 to 0090. So it may well be production line orientation. does the chassis number indicate this?
Thanks Dom81

I got the info on 'de-restricted' from the quote above. I took it to mean that it was not subject to the standard 155MPH limit.

I called Audi customer services today regarding sw updates. They said dealers will only update the sw if a customer complains of a fault that is clearly addressed by a particular version. If the owner reports no issues then software level stays as it is. Basically if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. They said there was no service campaign for a sw update.

Judging by others comments on this thread I think I will ask to be updated to at least 0080

That was the information I was given when I enquired about the SW updates. There is a SW variant for RS4 that are purchased in Germany that do not have the 155mph restriction.
Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a well sorted racecar

Mine was only the 3rd Avant delivered by Camberley Audi (in July 2006), and came with 0050 - so 0050 was being shipped earlier than "the last few made".

Here in Japan there was an ECU recall done in November 2007, my car was involved (i did not own it at the time) and now it has SW0080, i was told recently that SW0080 was the latest ECU version available (i did not want to enter into an argument about SW0090) so i conclude that probably all RS4 present in Japan are now on SW0080. Not sure if this is of any help to your debate though.

The recall notice:

Interestingly this shows the number of cars involved: 195 units (sold June 2006 to june 2007) for the RS4.

Audi UK Customer Services are also looking into this for me and even they are struggling.
Told them to ring Camberley which they said they would.
Called me back yesterday but I missed the call, it's been 3 days since they called for more info so hopefully that was the answer.
Person there was called Vinnie.

That doesn't agree with my experience.

When I took my RS4 for its service in 2008 I was told that the engine ECU SW would be upgraded to 0080 under a service campaign, I hadn't complained of any problems at all.

After the upgrade to 0080 I had the lumpy cold start and rough running for the first few minutes, so when I heard about the existence of 0090 as a cure for these problems the next time I took my car to an Audi dealer (this year) I complained of the lumpy cold start and rough initial running and was offered SW 0090.

So my experience is that upgrades to 0080 are automatic, but the uograde to 0090 is on request only and only when complaining of cold start isues.

This agrees with what has been posted here earlier (last year IIRC).

I agree, there are far too many cars with SW0080 for it all to be due to complaints.

Audi UK called and this is their conclusion;

The cars needs to be diagnosed by an Audi Centre as needing SW0090 before they will load it.

I don't know if this is a trick to somehow extract money for having it done, i.e. pay for diagnosis and update is free, or maybe you have to pay for both.

All I know is I can't be ar5ed to leave it was an Audi Centre for "2 days" for this to occur when the cars runs perfectly and only smokes a bit due to excess fuel when started and stopped repeatedly when cold especially when my local centre is incompetent and already had the car for a service and said that it didn't smoke when they had it.

Still not heard back from Halesowen Audi but losing interest now.

Either Audi UK have changed their position, or some Audi dealers "do their own thing".

I'm very glad I've had 0080 replaced by 0090 - cold starting is much smoother, and the bonus of an enhanced exhaust note.

I told him Camberley Audi just upload it as required and he said they shouldn't be doing that.

TBH the whole experience is almost enough to put you off the brand.
If I wasn't so brand loyal I'd be off

SW0090 isn’t an Audi recall, it’s a ‘customer preference’ and as such is chargeable. Whether your dealer charges you for this is entirely at their discretion and dependant on your relationship you have with them……..or which side of the bed they got out of that morning!

I don't mind paying for it, I do mind paying them for diagnosing a situation that I already know exists however rarely - how can they just disregard what the owner says unless there is some side effect to 0090 so they only want you to have it if you need it - like raised emissions.

In fairness to Camberley, they upload it if you describe the symptoms that it's designed to cure. It's not done as a matter of course, but (was) readily done on the word of the driver, and without this diagnosis bollocks

I'm getting annoyed, and I'm not you!

Exactly the same at Portsmouth Audi - I described the sympotms, said I knew there was an engine SW update that would fix it and they did it without any fuss.
