what oil?
So what gives re: the difference between US Oil VW502 and ROW at VW504/507? It looks like the only recommended oil in the US is VW502 which is a 5w-40.
I believe it is because of sulfur in the gasoline here, but I figured someone smarter than me has a better answer.
Thanks!

This is the one recommended in Australia:
Castrol SLX Professional Longlife III Powerflow 5W-30
Castrol Edge doesn't meet the spec according to the service book

That's interesting. Because the RS4 needs a specific type of oil, my indi had a Mobil Sales Rep come in, and was asked if they make oil for the RS4. He called back a few days later and said no, their oil doesn't meet the specs needed for the RS4. That's why we've hd to stick with Castrol.
My indi uses Motul in most european cars, but even Motul (in Australia) doesn't have a spec for the RS4 (as far as I'm aware).

There are a huge number of threads on this forum about oil usage in the RS4.
Suffice to say:
1) A dealer advising you in the UK to use a 0w-30 doesn't know what he is talking about.
2) If you do the oil analysis, like I did whilst I owned the car, oil in this vehicle is really suffering even after 4-5000 miles. The idea you can keep oil in this car on a Longlife service interval is bonkers IMO. It is NOT a 2.0 TDi. Its a 4.2 FSI V8 that spins at 8000+rpm etc etc
3) Silkolene Pro S was the best oil for the car in terms of its ability to reduce wear on the engine.
4) Opie Oils are a great source of information and, like PetrolDave says, offer a club discount.

Silkolene Pro S is excellent oil and we sold it for many years but also highly rate Millers XFS 5w40 which we now sell tons of.
Not sure who makes Tescos oil but would be interesting to find out as its probably one of the major brands out there.

Here in the UK SLX III has been rebranded as Edge or more accurately SLXIII is the trade name and Edge the consumer retail name.2manytoys wrote:This is the one recommended in Australia:

You can ask your dealer to change the service interval if you wish, if you drive your car hard then I recommend you come off the Long life service.
When the car is purchased the dealers ask what your driving style is and your preferred service interval, likewise mine was on Long life and had it changed to Inspection service Regime ( 10k/1 year oil/service).
Likewise I use Shel Helix 5/30w as that's what my Local Audi dealership uses.

I heard M1 0W40 shears down really badly in an RS4 engine.. I have it in our A4 2.0T, but that's a totally different car that drinks oil like you wouldn't believe.ArthurPE wrote:Mobil 1 0W40 is VW/Audi approved for use in the US
My dealer uses Castrol Syntec 5w40, but on I have the Audi maint pkg and they will only do oil changes every 7500 or 10k mi.
I got my 08 RS4 w/ 6k miles on it and it has 8350 miles.. I believe the oil was changed by the dealer at around 6k mi, but that was 8 months ago, so it is time for an oil change!
Pennzoil Ultra has a 5w40 for our car now in the US.
I believe it is rebranded Shell Helix. Do any of my fellow RS4 owners in the EU or elsewhere have any experience w/ Helix in our RS4?
Thanks!

@RS4VR I have been using Shell Helix in my RS4 now for over a year, but I top up with Castrol. there both 5w30.
@PD my dealer again has Shell Helix on tap but provide Castrol 1ltr bottle as top up. Seems there is differences between UK dealerships as well as world wide.
