Bah! New windscreen required

Had a couple of chips on the windscreen for a while and always meant to get around to having them repaired. But with the cold snap up north came out this morning to find the windscreen cracked. Guess it'll be a call to Autoglass in the morning. On the upside the insurance will cover it minus a small excess.

Anyone on here had a windscreen replaced? Anything to watch out for?

While travelling in the fast lane of the m4 last week (obeying the national speed limit!!!) had a large stone smack my windscreen and leave a 20pence size creator - Screen is being changed on Friday :-(

Rest of the car is ok apart from a smell by the drivers seat :oops:

Watch how they pull the wire (like a cheese cutting wire) that cuts the sealent holding the screen in, check for marks on the corner of the bonnet where the windscreen, wing and bonnet meet. Seen them drag the wire over the paintwork.

Make sure you get the right screen ordered, they ordered a top tint for mine (S4) which it doesn't have so ended taking 2 trips to get it sorted and check how they plan to hold your rear view mirror on. The mirror needs to glued, no sticky pads or it will fall off within a week.

Thanks for the heads-up. Will be all over them like a rash as they do the work.

Already covered the top tint option. Mine doesn't have it but will double check tomorrow when it's light just to make sure although I'm pretty certain it's just the standard tint.

Had a windscreen changed on a Rav4 a few years back and the mirror was a complete pain to get to stay on with glue however had a windscreen changed on an mx-5 last year and the windscreen came with the fastener already glued in place so will be interesting to see what turns up this time.

Mine came on a back road only just wide enough for a car to pass. Saw a milk delivery van coming so slowed down to allow him to pass comfortably. The <beep> blasted past and kicked up the stone that caused the damage. Felt like following him and giving him a good shoeing. Now I maintain my position smack bang in the middle until they slow. Pisses some people off but keep the car intact :thumbs:

You've probably got it covered, but I think there's a different tint pattern if you have the rain sensor

Well, elected to go back to the dealer to have it fitted next week plus will get the oil cooler service recall done at the same time so kills two birds with one stone. Bonus is that they are just round the corner from my office so any issues with workmanship/loose mirrors will get attended to promptly. They use a local specialist firm to do the work and the price was pretty reasonable at just over £300 all-in so probably comparable with Autoglass.

Spoke with Autoglass but the guy at the local workshop didn't seem to be clued up on what was required for my car plus he was being a bit of a <beep>. When I said I'd go and get it done at Audi he stated that I wouldn't be able to claim on my insurance which is complete bollocks. Only difference is I will need to pay up front and claim back minus excess rather than the usual direct route via Autoglass. Doesn't seem to be too much of a hardship to do this if it saves a trip to the stealer and gives some assurance for any issues with the install.

Don't know what's changed at Audi Aberdeen recently but aftermarket service seems to have improved quite a bit.
