Post by psg001 » Thu Oct 01, 2009 8:43 am

Hi guys,

just wondering which fuel you all put in your RS4 and any noticable difference in how the car runs on it compared to other super unleaded brands?

1)shell optimax
2)tesco 99
3)BP ultimate
4) any others?

Tesco 99, the rewards with Tesco for using their fuel at present are better as is the fact you get 5p per litre off if you shop with them at present making it 101.9 for me at present as opposed to 109.9 for V-Power.

With the amount I use in a month it stacks up to near £200 a year difference when they have the promotions on.

I remember someone likening petrol to beer where V-Power was like Kronenburg and Tesco 99 was Stella Artois. Wife beater all the way for me please!

I would NEVER put any supermarket petrol in any of may cars!!! Including Tesco 99. Although I believe I'm in a minority on this.

Shell Optimax is my favourite when I can get it as it's the best quality of them all.

Tesco 99 has done very well in independant tests with some of the racing fraternity - the difference between all the high octance brands is marginal at best.

Tesco 99 RON is supplied by Greenenergy though, not by Tesco's normal unleaded supplier. It also comes in a separate tanker hecne why some of my local stations will get a delivery but still have no 99 afterward.

I see some small independant race teams using Tesco 99. Personally I think it's a risk as supermarkets buy everything at the very lowest price possible. This reflects in the quality of the fuel provided. Sometimes if tested the fuel has been ok, othertimes like in the press 2 years ago it f*cked the engines of hundreds of people due to contamination. Tesco is supplied by a company named "Green Energy", of which Tesco own 40%. They buy basic fuel from the market/refineries, and store it in tank facilities inc Harvest Energy in Essex. If the tanks are not cleaned effectivily then contamination occurs like it did 2 years ago in a spectacular way. Prior to fuel delivery, they add their own additives for combustion, and deterrgent properties. Not all additives are the same, this is where the difference in fuel quality lies.

We spend alot of money on great cars. It's up to you what you put in it. It's rare for fuel in the UK to damage your engine these days but if it's going to happen it's going to be supermarket fuel and not the big guys like Shell, BP etc.

Shell V-Power for me for 4 reasons...

1. The Shell Station is close to work, and I drive past another on my way home
2. I like the Shell points (I know you have to use loads of fuel to get any benefits, so I guess that is the advantage of the RS4  )
3. It is on eof the cheapest fuel statiosn in the area
4. Its a well known brand

I would probably have used Tesco if it wasn't a 7 mile detour to the store

Most of the time its Shell V Power but really noticed the difference when i filled up with Tesco 99 it made the car feel more alive, the only problem is the only Tescos that sell this is miles away. Since Shell VPower has gone 99ron i havent notice the difference like i did with the Tescos petrol, oh well. Peter
