epc & engine light

Post by two2fat » Mon Aug 31, 2009 12:49 am

hi all im new 2 this forum. Could do wid some advice and help. The epc & engine light came on my car few weeks ago. Took it to dealers they kept it for couple of days picked it back up they told me they couldnt pick out anything. They reset ecu and lights went off car went back to normal. Today i was driving all of a sudden both lights come on again and car start missing. So i called audi asist out. He checked it all out and told me theres a electric fault somewhere and told me to book it in back at the dealership. This is worrying me even more incase its something major. Has any1 experienced anyting like dis b4? Any advice or help appreciated.

I had the same thing like yours but not the misfiring. They ended up replacing the whole intake manifold under warranty.

The EPC light will come on when there is something not correct as related to the intake manifold flaps. Either they are getting stuck or something is keeping them from opening of closing fully. The "something" is carbon buildup, and in bad cases, the buildup is not only on the intake valves but extends up the manifold ports and buggers up the flaps as well. The carbon buildup also causes simultaneous MIL light since misfires are likely. In other similar cases, the entire manifold is replaced since disassembling the manifold to clean all the gunk out isn't feasible. This may be a doom and gloom response, but with the RS4, fingers get pointed at carbon buildup for good reason. The diagnostic codes should tell a decent dealer what the problem is. The manifold should really be removed and the flaps inspected (under warranty). If they are just staring at the engine wondering what possibly could be keeping the flaps from working properly, they are not doing a very good job.

As someone who has de-vaned their manifold, I do not think that a 'clean-up' should be beyond an Audi technician. Yes, it's a ball ache, popping out the core plugs to acess the mounting screws of the vanes and then pulling the shafts. However, if I can do it, anyone can!!!
