I sold my RS4 last October to make way for a GT-R coming in April. I haven't been keeping up to speed with news of tranny failures, so have you got your dealer to agree to additional cover regarding the 'box, or are you saying that the UK warranty will cover this as standard?

All uk GTR's will be covered for ALL aspects of the car incl the gearbox.

i am assurred Nissan will stand firmly behind their product.

the only problem might be if you launch the thing excessively!!

i can not think of any cicumstance when one would need to use this function on your own car.

if you are in any doubt give your dealer a call he will give you the official line.

In this picture, the factory transmission (1st gear) is on the right and a proposed aftermarket upgrade on the left:

Image

"The apparent weak spot in the stock transmission, according to PPG, is the teeth on the first gear cog, which develop tiny fractures that eventually fail under repeated stressful launches. One tooth breaks and the rest fall like dominoes. For those that won't be able to afford the likely expensive upgrade, but still want to win those prestigious traffic-light grand-prix's, there will be some comfort in knowing the car can still nearly equal a Corvette ZR-1 in the 0-60mph dash without launch control."

Have thought seriously about a gtr, to the point of getting my credit card out whilct chatting to the Nissan guy for the umpteenth time at Nissan Oxford, but just cant get myself to do it.

When I heard of the disclaimer - "I agree not to drive to fast" it confirms my initial instinct. Yes it is as fast as a porsche turbo, but it is a nissan and it will break, otherwise why the disclaimer. Just my opinion, but after thrashing the thing in a straight line a few times, I would become horibly aware its a Nissan. I would get a sense of dread, become self concious and want to sell it, being worried about the stigma and the fact that somethings going to fall off. No one would want to buy it because we are in a credit crunch and I would be stuck wishing I had bought a second hand Porsche or a more sensible RS4 / M5.

But if you have traded in your RS4, best of luck. It is one hell of a car and I would love to drive it. But to own one, I wouldn't last long.

Check www.nagtroc.com. I could have lived with the 'launch control' issue and never planned to launch it anyway. But recently about 15 cases of tranny solenoids going kaput even without launching. All GTR imports to the Philippines are grey market imports hence no dealer support (no consult 3 testbook) w/c is why I sold it.

This has just been posted ..

Yes, Nissan has finally approved a transmission claim. I have first hand knowledge because i am the service advisor for this vehicle. We have been going back and forth with Tech Line and the Engineering department for almost 2 months now and they have finally approved a total transmission replacement on my customers car. I am not sure why they choose to approve this claim, they did not give us any explaination about the information they retrieved from the vehicle. Total warranty cost for this repair $26,000..... just thought i'd share.

What about the cars in the UK so far .. any broken .. ??

I think thats the point NGS521, isnt it - If launch wasnt there, it wouldnt be a problem, but it is... so their gonna want to use it (just in case) and then, its gonna break!

At first I said I wouldnt launch my SMG M3, but I did, lots! :)

I said that too and mine got the beans the whole time AND it never missed a beat. (when I owned it anyway!)

Can't believe that Nissan would fail to honour any claims connected to the gearbox if the car hasn't been modified. This is their flagship model after all. They'll not be wanting to lose face after publicly boasting about the performance of the thing against the 911 turbo.

The men from Stuttgart will be laughing their bratwursts off tho.

that video is hilarious!!!

I am also considering a GTR as a potential replacement in the next year.

I thought the passenger collision thing was a pain in the arse, but will be keeping a close eye on this one.

Fantastic car the GTR, who cares if its a nissan, its an immense machine, when its working it will keep the porsche boys quiet. but i guess good things dont come cheap!
