Is an RS4 Avant big enough for a family of 4?

Post by heihei » Wed Dec 26, 2007 8:01 pm

Am in the process of selling my Alpina B3.3 Touring. I have 2 kids <3 years and have 3-4 trips around the UK with mountain bike, kids, and roofbox. Would love to get an RS4 Avant, but would it be big enough, esp in the back for the kids, or would they forever be kicking the back of my (and my wife's) seat? Should I just get an RS6??

Depends which seats you choose. The sports seats really take up alot of room and that means if you are a six footer plus then you will have the seat right back and as the backs of the seats are convexed then it means nada legroom for the person behind you. Even young children will feel cramped and slightly claustrophobic.
Recaro seats may give more room but still not ideal.

I have a B5 Avant and even that struggles for space with my seat right back. The A4 just isn't that big a car unfortunately. Can you not get an RS6+? :D

Do we really need this type of answer..............

Two of my kids are over 6 ft, and it is possible to transport them comfortably in an avant, used to have 330 D touring which I thought had less room in the back than B7, Certainly plenty of room for small kids.

I went from a b5 s4 to a rs6 , the 4 was far too small for the kids .I never looked at a b7 as it was out of my price range . The rs6 it just that little bit bigger all round so suits my needs very well.
The best thing it to go and try one with the kids and wife . Good luck as they are both great cars .. :kissmyrings:

I have a saloon and have two kids, Zak is 3 and Kye is 1. Room in the back is tight with the car seats. My wife has Zak kicking the back of the bucket, and I'm not the biggest of people (5' 10") and wouldn't be able to get Zak behind me.

I'm sure once they're out of car seats this shouldn't be an issue. There seems to be plenty of room in the back without the cars seats.

Simple answer from my direction is "no", if you have the bucket seats. I'm 6'0" and I find it difficult to get rear passangers comfortable in the back seats unless I pull the drivers seat forward - then I'm not in the ideal driving position. I'd suggest the A6 is a better answer for a family.

Never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

No is the quick answer. I have a 2 year old and she's just about kicked the back of the buckets to bits. Recaro's are a must if you've got kids or regular back seat passengers.
I love the car to bits but it was definitely a case of heart ruling the head. :?

I'm 6ft2in Have no problems getting comfy in the buckets. Wife 5ft 4in often complains re buckets (getting in/out etc ) but my 5 yr old sits behind her on car seat and seems to have plenty of room. Back seats and back of front passenger seats protected by protective covers so no damage sofar.
I have a saloon and have had no concerns re boot space
Think car change likely though if family grows, and have (sorry) been looking at nearly new M5s as second child is 'work in progress'

I have two kids, one in a booster seat and one in a proper isofix child seat. There isn't a huge amount of room for their feet behind my seat (I'm 5' 11''), but there is plenty of room behind the passenger seat for my eldest.

We have done a number of long trips to France etc with no complaints or problems with space. Best advice is try and get a long test drive with the family installed and form your own opinion.

We had better let you get back to work then

I am 6 foot and have a saloon with buckets, my kids are 9 and 5 and the car seems plenty big enough. The leg room is a bit tight for adults though.
