Had the 996 Turbo, then a 997 C2 S and currently have the RS4 Avant.

996 TT fastest.....considerably, both acceleration and point to point. Absolutely no argument accepted on this one.

997S much quicker than 996 C2S and defo quicker than RS4 though more difficult to drive quickly point ot point

RS4 the slowest of the 3, though easier than 997 to drive quickly point to point.

It certainly is no surprise you couldn't shake the C4S....they are quick cars.

Robbo, the 996TT FEELS much faster but it isn't much faster than an RS4 B7 saloon. I appreciate you have an avant and hence it is slightly slower due to the extra weight but as already discussed:

996 TT 30-130 mph = 15s
RS4 B7 saloon 30-130 mph = 15.5s
996 TT x50 pack 30-130 mph = 13.44s

I've witnessed the above myself at bruntingthorpe during vmax and 30-130 timed runs several times.

I think you'd be hard pressed to notice a 0.5s difference between the 2. I agree off the line the 996TT will get to its quarter mile distance faster but that is purely because of better rear traction and lower weight. Once things are moving, the RS4 is a close match (in saloon form).

I've raced a 997 C2S from 80-175....

Let him pull ahead of me, and then went for it when he did.

I was well pissed off when my wife woke up and told me to slow down because from about 140 onwards I was catching him albeit slowly.

There is no way a stock RS4 would stay with a 997TT in a straight line, but once you leave the motorway, I reckon it'd be impossible for the Porsche to get away from you.

C2S yes, 997TT not a chance. Those things are rocket ships & standing start, in gear & round the twisties the 997TT would cream the RS4. A C2S would be much closer & ability/balls would have a big part to play.

Paul :D your spot on mate, my mate has a new 997 turbo and it's frightning!!! I've had fast cars RS6, M3 etc and of course RS4 to come but that thing is on drugs, and so usable! my wife has worked for Porsche uk for 3 years so I get the chance to go and play in them every now and then and if we didn't have little people to cart about i'd probably have a 997 c4s, which from what i've experiences is very close to an RS4 saloon. However the turbo is another story! as it's been said before it would be up there as your weapon of choice even if you had millions in the bank!! But as you also balls and sometimes stupidity can be the difference between winning or loosing!
Current car..... hmmmmm????

Nah the 997TT can't be frightening because if it is, the new "widow-maker" will be absolutely impossible...what with 530hp, 1450kg and 2WD?

Real world (i.e., not track), IMHO, it will be hard for even the 997TT to get away but I've not had the pleasure of duelling with one.

Any 997TT's at VMAX?

What were they topping out at?

It's the GT2 that's the "Widow Maker". The 997TT as AWD, it's the GT3 & GT2 that are RWD.

Had a few 997TT's at VMAX & usually the DMS car is present. As for top speeds, i can't recall for sure, but IIRC it's the mid 180's down the strip. As for 0-??? they're insane & very little can keep pace.

I dont think the c2s could be driven point to point as fast as rs4. C4s i think would take some beating as they feel far more planted. I drove both back to back but found pasm on the c2s a bit wallowy whereas the the c4s felt alot better. i would like to try the sports suspended 2 and 4s back to back as i think although in real terms probably give less grip may give the driver a bit more confidence.

Yeah that was my point.

If Porsche created a 997TT that folk can't handle, how the f**k do they expect anyone to handle the "widow maker"?

People who can't handle the TT ought to have a go on a turbocharged ZX10R...

For the record as i was mooching the tinterweb.

Please note the Nordschleife times for the respective cars discussed in this thread.

RS4 Saloon is quicker that the 997 CS & i'd say that Walter is faster RingMeister than Frank so perhaps that gap with the same driver may be bigger & better for the B7 RS4. Also & the real proof is the B7 RS4 vs 996TT & the difference is a huge 2 seconds round the 20KM track. Hardly a big difference & why i stated that neither of the 2 cars (997CS & 996TT) would be cars to fear in the RS4. Not that case as stated with the 997TT or 997GT3 that are a good 20sec quicker.

Definitely no hope in hell of a standard RS4 keeping up with the 997 TT - that thing is ludicrously fast - I mean sh*t your pants fast! What a blast though!

the obvious flaw in the comparison is that the 997 is a two adult seater sports car with no luggage room and the RS4 in avant form can carry a bathroom suite home from B and Q.

its not the outright supercar beating performance that makes it special for me, its the sheer look of bewilderment on supercar owners face and dissapointment that their 100-150K compromised unpracitcal supercar can't gain more than a few car lenghts advantage on a estate car 3 up with a labrador in the back.

the saloon might be slightly quicker, but there is no doubting the Avant offers more comedy value.

Didnt a 997S beat an R8 on top gear the other week in a straight line? Does the R8 not share the RS4's lump in a lighter application?

Yes it did, however I think the comparison here is point to point, not just standing start. Plus like previously said, having five doors and enough space to transport a family and their bits in Avant form whilst keeping up.

this might shed a tiny bit of light, my previous car was a 997 Carrera 4 S, fitted with a sports exhaust and it certainly helped the car breath better. I noticed it was significantly sharper from stand still and the standard car quotes 4,8secs - 60mph, so if the car you were chasing had the sports exhaust it could have made the difference. Given the choice of the two, I'd stick with my RS4 :)
