Didn't take the bait.....but

Post by Lake_M » Sun Jul 29, 2007 8:22 pm

I was tagged for a while today by a (previous model) M5 before he got sick and blasted past at warp factor 5 - he wanted to play. I had wife and 2 year old in with me at the time so a chase wasn't on the cards.

Just wondered how I would have faired? I know the current M5 would have been away (it was dry), but what about the older model?

On paper, you would have had the edge:

E39 M5
4.9 Ltr V8
400 bhp, 370 lb ft
Weight - 1,720 kg
0-60 - 5.3s
0-100 - 11.4s
quarter mile - 13.2s

RS4 being slightly lighter, slightly more powerful and timed as having slightly better performance:

0-60 - approx 4.6-4.8s
0-100 - mid 10s
quarter mile - high 12s

I think in real world terms, the superior torque of the beemer would have made it almost equal in a straight line. In bends, he would have been a dot in your mirror I would imagine.
Current: C7 RS6 - Black, VW Passat CC R36 - Black, Freelander 2 - Black
Sold: 911 C4S (991) - Black, Panamera Turbo ('11) - Carrera White, Nissan GT-R - DMG, B8 S4 - Phantom Black, B7 RS4 - Daytona grey saloon, Noble M400, Golf R32, Evo VIII MR, M3, Cooper S, Civic Type-R, BMW 120D (black), Mazda 6 MPS

Cheers Alex. I know they're quick because one wiped the floor with me once when I owned a 147 GTA.

Not so I don't think because I have on different ocasions had the pleasure of having a play with an E39 M5 when I was in the S4(V8) and every time it was the same, none of us could get away from the other so the RS would wipe the floor with the M5, wouldn't it

Ive previously "played" with an M6 aswell. The M6 was quciker through the lower gears, but could not get away - the gap difference altered accordingly as the gears changed - and then we got to 155 and hit a stalemate. It was certainly fast, but didnt wipe the floor - so Im guessing a previous M5 would struggle to beat you.
Everyone is unique, just like you and me.

Having come from an E60 M5 to a B7 RS4, the current M5 will pull a fair gap in a straight line drag, but will hit a wall at higher speeds hence why it's drag times are only 1/2 - 1 sec quicker than the RS4. Bear in mind, although it's 200KG heavier, it's also 100BHP more powerful & once you master the SMG, the gear changes are slightly quicker than anyone could manage in a manual.

Saying all that, across country progress & away from the drag strip, the RS4 feels constantly quicker, as i can carry greater speeds into & out of corners/roundabouts etc. & in less than perfect road conditions, that margin increases further.

I have had first hand experience of a burn up with 2 E39 M5's and having owned one I can say the RS4 is quicker, not massively, but still pulled away from both of them in every gear.

Sorry, I should have phrased my statement differently. It would surprise me if a B7 RS4 "wiped the floor" with an E39 M5. As already pointed out, the RS4 is faster on paper as it is slightly more powerful and lighter. However, torque makes a huge difference in real world terms and the M5 has praiseworthy amounts for an N/A engine. I think an RS4 would pull away, but not massively as djcevo says.

For its age however, the E39 M5 is still an awesome car.

Very true, even the older E34 M5 with the 3.8 engine is still a great peice of kit.

ive raced a couple of B7 RS4's and it all depends on how there driven and who gets the drop at the lights...

Sykotoy has run 12.8 or so in Oz. I believe his B7 saloon is standard.

how much does an RS4 weigh..leon's S4 has 501 bhp and ran a 12.5 at the pod..high 12's is good considering thats almost 100bhp down on his S4..
