I was led to believe that a car was only recorded as stolen and recovered if the insurance had already paid out and it becomes their property, in which case this would'nt effect you. Anyone know for sure?

your car will lose £10k overnight if it is stolen recovered so no tracker for me thanks
also even if recovered I guess insurance will load your premium (obviously not as much)

With cars like RS4's the most likely thing is they will be stolen and then parked up somewhere for a couple of days to see if they have tracker on them. During this time it is highly likely they will be located and recovered with them actually being driven by the thief very little as they don't want the risk of being caught driving round in them.
I would personally be quite happy to get it back, rather than the hassle and expense of losing no-claims discount and getting new car (which in the case of RS4 won't be possible fairly soon so you'll be buying a used car which has probably been ragged just as hard as any thief would drive it anyway!) Re-sale value shouldn't be to badly affected as they would have to be stolen with keys, with no damage caused, get the immobliser and alarm etc re-coded and there is no real problem for you or future buyers.

I have just taken GAP out from
www.surfandprotect.com who I found very helpful. Most GAP policies have to be taken out when the car is new and cover the first year even if covered by full replacement insurance in first year. They do give a discount on a four year term if the car is replaced by a new car in the first year by the std insurance.
This was a hell of a lot cheaper than the GAP taken out last year through my Audi dealer. Incidently I think Gap is a dealer money maker not an Audi one. The other thing about the S&P policy is that it can be transferred to the new car. My previous one lapsed with the car.
The reason for 2 GAPs in 12 months? Sadly my first RS4 was category D'd following an accident (unlit car facing the wrong way in the fast lane!!)

Sorry to be vague. Overtaking lane of motorway. The unlit car had run into the back of another car and had just spun into the central reservation in front of the car in front of me and was facing me with no lights (murky night, unlit motorway). The car in front did not brake (so no brake lights)but indicated left and swerved to avoid. I thought she was pulling over to let me pass and next thing saw the unlit headlights of the car against the reservation facing me. I did not even have time to brake and hit at 70mph. The motorway was fairly busy and traffic was flowing at about the official limit. The RS4 was remarkably stable and never moved off course, There was a large thump and the tyre pressure warning came on and smoke and steam appeared. No air bags and seat belt did not tighten.

Are you sure it was 70 mph, an impact at 70 mph into a stationary car would put you 6 feet under!

Absolutely sure. It only hit the front drivers quarter (from edge of grill). The stationery car ( also hit drivers front quarter) was sent spinning out into other vehicles (fortunately not hurt).

Adam, where did you get the £10k from?
admittedly not same car but this exact thing happened to a guy with a Merc (AMG C or E class I think) and posted on PH about the dangers of tracker - his car lost £10k+ when he got it back due to tracker, may have some minor damage which he got sorted on insurance

It's all about personal choice and circumstance.
For me i have 4 policies so the NCD and no claim is important. The odd's of my car being stolen are very slim so the gap insurance is a no no, and as hanbury says your insurance covers new for old in the first year.
Well my order is in and Daytona Grey is the colour, Tracker Horizon is fitted as part of the deal, so may as well use it.

If you want proper security, remote anti hijack is the only way to go. Dial a telephone number and enter an activation code, it will then cut the engine dead. Because the unit has a sim card fitted as long as there is a mobile phone signal wherever the car is, it will just die! Obviously if the car is parked up it's not much good, but for thieves on the move, its great.
And if you're lucky it'll be 2 minutes from your house, so you can go and retrieve it (with an appropriately handy baseball bat of course).
