Hi m8

The recommended oil is 'castrol edge 5W-30' £43 from Halfords.

Not heard of Castrol Edge before, is that a new one?

Anyhow, officially you must make sure that you use VAG 503.01 Spec oil. From the factory the S3 came with Castrol Formula SLX 0W-30 (dont confuse it with Longlife or Longlife 2). Saying that I use Mobil 1 as its 0w-40 so a bit thicker at higher temps - but as long as your oil meets VAG 503.01 you have the right oil

PS Never heard of Papaya Red before - what does that look like - heard of Papaya Orange though (but thats more like yellow)

hmm... usually i have used Castrol SLX which meets the 503.01 spec, but now i cannot found that from any local dealer.

This new Castrol has only 505.00 spec but not 503.01 Is this still comparable oli for S3?

There is also Mobil 1 which i have also used and it meets both 503.01 and 505.00 specs but i would rather use Castrol than Mobil...

Not seen the Castrol Edge stuff so cannot comment - nayone know if 505.00 is valid for the S3? I always used Castrol Formula SLX previous to Mobil 1, but i guess the Audi dealers got a better deal on Mobil 1, as most around my way seem to stock that now.

503.01 is the oil developed for variable servicing, and its the same oil as used in the RS4 B5, but I have oil changes at regular intervals as I dont want to wait for the indicator to say so as thats approx 18K miles between oil changes! and on a modified car thats stupid. I think there is a different grade for fixed service intervals, maybe thats 505?

yea, thats why i was wondering if 505 will do cause my car has mtm 345 setup and only oil spec that i can use (as i know) is 503.01...

i think ill have to visit local mtm dealer and confirm this...

thanx anyway!

Hopefully this will clear up any problems.
Q. Which is the replacement for the SLX Longlife II oil?
A. This is the EDGE 5W-30 - the Longlife oil was a 506.00 / 506.01 specification – you’ll notice that the spec on the EDGE 5W-30 is VW 504.00 / 507.00 – this is the latest VW specification for the Longlife oils and is backwards compatible; meaning it can be used where the 506.00 / 506.01 / 503.00 specification is required.

The EDGE 5W-30 is suitable for all Audi vehicles, and all VW vehicles that do not specify the 505.01 (fixed servicing), for which EDGE 5W-40 should be recommended.

Andy,

Almost, but in your quote it says SLX Longlife II, but this is the wrong oil for a S3 - the correct oil was Formula SLX 503.01, not Longlife I or Longlife II. Took a look at the link and the Edge 0w-30 meets the 503.01 spec so that seems to be the correct replacement for Formula SLX

There is catch all solution now with the emergence of the new VAG oil codes that cover all the old ones.

If you use a VW504.00/507.00 this covers off all the old codes and makes life a whole lot simpler when it comes to oil choice. They are either 0w-30 or 5w-30 grades.

You definitely should be using a VAG recommended oil but doesn't it all depend on what type of service plan the car is set to? That's the main difference with the 503 and 503 01 oils isn't it? One is for the longlife servicing, the other is for more regular servicing

503.00 is longlife, 503.01 is for cars above 180bhp but is not longlife. They are both usually 0w-30's with a couple of exceptions. Mobil1 0w-40, Motul 0w-40 E-Tech ester.

Simon,

503.01 is/was the AVS oil, for S3, TT 225 and RS4 - when you say its not longlife are you saying its not for AVS servicing or did you mean something else?
