Improve the flow (part II): Help needed!

Post by cris_b » Tue Jun 07, 2005 12:37 pm

So I took it upon myself this weekend to fit the box of goodies from Forge Motorsport. Turbo intake hose, two turbo hoses and a replacement diverter valve (as discussed in this thread). The turbo to intercooler hose that sits next to the battery was fairly easy, but the one on the otherside next to the screen wash bottle is looking like a bit of a pain. :(

So off to the Audi dealers to get some advice and pick up some bits I'd ordered. Bit of a chat with the workshop foreman and he says that the best way to get to the intercooler end of the problematic pipe is to take the headlight out. Had already guessed this and asked how this was done. He said that you need to remove the indicator first (there is a retaining clip that you need to depress to release it so you can pull it out apparently) and then you can access the third bolt that holds the main headlight in (top two torx bolts are easy to get to).

So back home I start looking at it. Not much room to work in, but I cannot see any way to release the indicator. Off with the wheel arch liner then. Can see more and reach to the back of the indicator more easiily, but I still can't work out how to release the indicator from the bodywork. Any ideas? :?

Also need to remove the indicator on the battery side as in the recent wet weather it seems to have become a bit of a bucket. And had about an inch of water swilling about in it

Currently thinking that the only way to deal with this is going to be taking the entire bumper off and that is looking like a pain in the bum...

I know someone who fitted the hoses (PaulS3 on www.tyresmoke.net) and I believe he took the bumper off. Take a look on there in the A3/S3 forum, you should be able to find the thread...

Yes Paul did remove his bumper in order to do the right hand hose.

I replaced my Turbo inlet pipe this morning with a Samco jobbie. Easy job to do. Not sure I can tell any difference yet to be honest. I'm not sure about doing the main turbo pipes as they are pressurised anyway and I'm not sure if they are as much of a restriction as the inlet (suction based).

Boo :( According to Amazon the A3 Haynes manual will be out next month. I reckon I can probably remove the bumper without it, but it does make life easier to have it around for jobs like this...

Sitas3: I haven't done the inlet pipe and diverter valve yet. Attached to the OEM inlet pipe is routing for a smaller 10mm hose. I'm guessing that you just need to undo this at one end and feed it through the guides. I bought some replacement hose anyway and a load of hose crimps for the smaller diameter pipes. Also the bottom of the inlet pipe is out of sight unless you're a contortionist, so I think I will follow Paul's tip and use a mirror to make sure it's fitted on okay. Did you have any other problems fitting it?

yes I just fed the 10mm wastegate actuator hose through the guides - just smear some washing up liquid on the hose to make it come off easier.

You don't need a mirror for the bottom of the hose - you can quite easily feel with your fingers around where the pipe attaches to the turbo inlet and if it isn't on, then you'll know about it as the pipe will just flap around easily! - you need to reach down there anyway so you can tighten the hose clip.

Good luck. again, it hasn't made an earth-shattering difference to my car. In fact, the OEM Audi hose off my car looks to be quite sturdy in the place where people are supposedly having trouble. If anything, the Samco looks to be a bit weaker in certain parts (one being the first bend at the top of the hose!)

facelift S3 there is no way to get to the drives IC without bumper off, to get headlight out.

I can now take th bumper off, reseat without any marks completely on my own.

although its easier and quicker with two people.
