Crunching gears

Post by DuncS3 » Wed Sep 15, 2004 1:53 pm

Just recently i have noticed at high revs (6K +) when changing from 2nd to 3rd the gear change crunches quite badly

Anyone else experierenced this or can shed some light on what it is?

Will probs just go to the dealer with it and see what they say...

Audi gearboxes (certainly in S3 and TT) are notoriously bad, most noticeably in 2nd and 3rd. I occasionally found that mine wouldn't go into 3rd without some gentle coaxing!

Dunc,

I had the same problem quite some time ago. May have posted about it on here, if not, certainly on AS.net.

To cut a long story short, it is a common problem on S3's and TT's, and the solution is either a gearbox rebuild or completely new gearbox. My dealer got the gearbox rebuilt under warranty, and its spot on. Had no problems since.

Good luck. But your ammunition to get it done under warranty is: search all the forums, including Audiworld. Its a very common problem.

Interesting reading this chaps. I have a Leon Cupra R which has the same gearbox bar the 4wd gubbins and have just had mine replaced by the dealer with exactly the same fault at 22k miles. If its gone to the stage of crunching I wouldn't accept an oil change, just think of the damage being done every time it happens....

Dunc,

See how it goes, that may well fix the problem. I know with mine, they tried a couple of things first. Like adjusting the clutch, and making sure its mechanism was working correctly. They then dropped the gear box oil a couple of times to check for swarf. My dealer said, they had to rule things out first, before saying to Audi "this gearbox needs replacing/rebuilding", obviously its a costly part/job.

Its just a pain going backwards and forwards to the dealer.

Stick it out mate.
