APR Stage 3+ for S3

Post by Msportman » Thu May 17, 2007 1:57 pm

All is not lost in the ever quest for keeping your S3 on pace with the newer more powerful models now being manufactured.

I haven't got an S3 but a MKIV Golf which has been extensively fettled by Jim Cotton at Awesome.

I have owned the car since nearly new....the wife drove it up to 90k and in that time it was running APR Stage 1 then their Stage 2 mapping to take into account the Milltek Exhaust CAT and DP, Neuspeed FMIC and larger TIP.Other upgrades included Neuspeed anti roll bars Koni Suspension (Ride Height kit) Poly bushed all round.

Brakes included Tarox 6 Pot 2 piece brakes 335mm discs running Carbon Ceramic pads and Motul RB 600F synthetic fluids.

On the transmission side it runs a Sachs sports clutch lightened flywheel and Quaiffe ATB diff.

It was also running the obligatory BBS CH alloys and an Oettinger body kit.

I thought I'd post the next item as it may interest a few people on here looking for more grunt.

My car was the first UK car tp be fitted with the APR Stage 3+ turbo kit which utilises APR's modified Garrett GT28RS roller bearing turbo.

The kit uses a new manifold designed and manufactured in Australia for APR by Guy Harding. The beauty of this item which is Ceramic coated high quality manifold is that it comes with Lifetime warranty.

The kit comes complete with everything. Prices are very competitive and the results are simply stunning.

On Jim's dyno even on the small Neuspeed FMIC it produced 340bhp and 330lbs......on stage 3+ mapping on the 98 fuel program.

It drives like stock Golf in many ways and even spoils earlier than expected from 2k....peak torque is just a smidge over 3K and it pulls like a train to over 7K...it's super smooth and very tractible :D

There's scope for even more with APR's new inlet manifold taking it to high 300's....I've not tried the race fuel program!!

This is all on stock Golf 4 internals.....more power means new rods and for me going 1900cc so for the time being at 104 k without no oil usage it will remain unchanged.

The level of performance is stunning and I'm still achieving 35mpg when driving sensibly everyday.....on a long motorway haul it gave 32mpg on mixed blasts.

Neil Birkett is featuring the car in VW Driver Inters issue...he was mightly impressed and says he's going to start saving!!

This kit has been in the US for some years now and I've waited for some years as for me it was the only kit I could afford and trust...the Sportec and MTM kits although nice were a tad expensive. APR have a very good reputation world wide and they uses very high quality components which are well proven.

Thee beauty of this kit is that I can still uses a reduced power program for longevity and there's also a 95 RON fuel program and all of the other APR features available via the cruise stalk.

Jim's TT should be absolutely stunning when finshed...he using the APR Stage 3+ but with the next turbo up...it's already seeing close to 400bhp without the APR manifold 1900 rebuild and custom map!!! Should be seeing mid to high 400's!!

My car will be on the Awesome stand at Inters if anyone's interested

Sounds good!! I have the 1900 rebuild and now i'm preparing to fit the FMIC and i'm saving for the big turbo upgrade. I was debating having it mapped to 280+bhp for now to get me by till i go for the 400bhp mark.

How do u find the uprated flywheel and clutch for driving?

My biggest issue with the S3 is the heavy flywheel, I find the revs just don't drop quick enough. The clutch isn't too bad, i was recommended to have the thrust plates upgraded when I go for big power cos the clutch is only 8months old. But i'd be interested in hearing what u think of the sachs one

I've had the clutch and flywheel in situ for 18 months....certainly the clutch gives a nice OE feel and is light to use.

The lightened flywheel gives it good spin up and is just as smooth as the dual mass item.

I thought the revs dropped slow to aid gear change per the ECU?

It drives almost like OE example but is actually smoother on spin up..the car is fautless IMO.

A lighter flywheel causes less resistance to the gear change doesn't it? The heavier flywheel would react slower to a gear change when the revs aren't matched well? I find the gear change quite finicky compared to other cars. It's not a drop and go kind of change like the BMW or Nissans. I find myself being very slow with the last bit on the clutch to get a smooth change.
