temp gauge
temp gauge
Hello All,
My temp gauge has just developed a mind of its own!? It now moves up to the middle of the gauge as normal, but then goes back down to zero as and when it feels like, continuing to yo-yo until you restart. During this time the car runs fine. Any ideas???
Thanks
Mark

RE: temp gauge
Sounds like the sender unit is broken.
You need VAG-COM to find out.
Alternatively, you can use the on board diagnostic's. Press and hold the recirculation button, then press the fan speed up (i think). Move to 51 using the temp button and press the recirculation button again.
If I remember correctly, this is the water temperature. I'll check again when I get home!
My dash says 90 degrees, but this always seems to read about 75 degrees

Thanks for your help Dave, I'll try it out later. Has this happened to your S3 then?

RE: temp gauge
what year is your S3? there is a revised sender unit out now IIRC and it is probably wise to change it anyway - mine's done - easy enough (if the coolant is cold!) job to do. Is the car suffering performance-wise? The water temp is one of the inputs into the ECU for optimum performance.
M3 CSL - Silver Grey, a few options.
RE: temp gauge
Mine is a 2000, totally standard with 40,000miles. Up until this point its been faultless.
It seems to run absolutely fine, although occassionally it will slightly miss when you first start it up?! One other thing I've noticed, at high revs, say 5,000 the engine gives a noticeable kick & really takes off ! Does yours?
Thanks for your advice Dave, nice to speak to you.

RE: temp gauge
Mine hasn't done this.
You should get the kick before 5k revs, about 2.5 - 3.0k !!!
Towards 6k revs, they should tail off as the exhaust gases can't escape quick enough.

RE: temp gauge
Hello Dave,
Changed the temperature sender unit at weekend, problem solved! Thanks for your advice, No other faults found on diagnostics. Bit concerned about mine, getting its 2nd wind at 5K, you get a real noticeable shove that low in the revs!?
Any suggestions as to getting this checked out? I don't fancy going down the remap route?
Thanks once again for your advice, much appreciated.

RE: temp gauge
Hi, I am another RS246 Newbie and have had a very similar problem with the temperature gauge on my 2000 A3 1.8 T Sport. It sounds like I need to change the sender on mine as well so using the vast knowledge and experience on this forum does any one know where the sender is and how hard a job is it for a relatively capable person like myself? Also, are they expensive?
While on the subject of car issues, when I start my car up when it is cold, for approx the first 60 seconds there is a noise of escaping air. After 60 seconds when the air pump at the front of the engine cuts out, the noise goes away. the pump takes air from the air box as when I take the pipe off the airbox and block up the pipe the noise stops as it cant suck any air in. I think the ait goes to the 'Kombi' valve to aid start up but I dont really under stand the system. After the first 60 seconds, the car returns to normal idle and runs really smoothly.
Any suggestions? Please help! I would create a new thread but cat work out how to do it yet!!

I have spoken to a couple of specialists who are not sure either and say it needs to go to Audi. I am assuming that the cars have some kind of system that gives the car more air on cold start up to aid idle etc..
Other than that the car is great!

P.S. My apologies for the appalling spelling and grammar in my last post!
Also, I know I must sound really thick but how do you post a new thread, as I can’t work out how to do it!

Cool.
At the top of each forum section you should a "new topic" button (also at the bottom), press this and away you go!

RE: Re: RE: temp gauge
I've got a VAG-COM cable and I'm located in the Cambs area if you want a free diagnostic check??
Not that it will guarantee anything as I bought my S3 giving it a diagnostic check (all clear) and it melted a piston 2 months later

Many thanks for the offer. I am in Derbyshire but travel down the A14 occasionally so I will give you a shout when I am next down.
