Ok peeps, just wanted some opinions as what to do.

I've just purchased an Abt style 3 piece boot spoiler and was wondering if I should get it painted to match(metallic black) or carbon fibre wrapped. Was toying with carbon wrapping the window chrome trims to get rid of the annoying stain marks from them.

Thoughts please.

I would go body colour for the spoiler and as for your 'pee stained' alloy I would try electricians tape on it first to see what you think, dont know what kind of longevity you would get out of wrapping your trims ? someone else may know

I do agree about the boot spoiler going body coloured. It did also come with one for the top of the rear window but don't really think much of it tbh. Was looking earlier and the worst bits are along the bottom bits so wouldn't mind keepng the top bits chrome if that makes any sesnse. Trying to find factory black ones would be like trying to find hens teeth tbh.

I have the same issue and whatever I try on the stuff it wont look clean, I did see Revolutions RS4 with matte black trim and it looked sweet

I had milky windscreen surrounds for a couple years before a mate had a go at them. LOTS of elbow grease and AG metal polish and they look SO much better now...

I've tried some industrial strength metal polish paste we use at work and it hasn't touched them. I may be being bit fussy but they are only really stained under the mirrors and a little one on each rear quarter window.

I think the 'polished' aluminium trim at the bottom of each door window is actually plastic coated aluminium so metal polish will not improve them if they're tarnished. Audi blamed chemicals in automatic car washes for oxidising the metal under the coating. I had a B6 3.0 Quattro for a few months and the previous owner had attempted to polish them - the trims on the doors looked really awful. Audi quoted £500+ to replace them as the doors required dismantling - I'm assuming the S4 trims are the same. I actually like the polished trims - sets the car apart from the regular A4s.

The trims cost 390 for a set but you need to remove the rear quarter window as the trim is mounted under it, and yes they are plastic...


Wrapping is easy enough, other option is plastidip you can spray it on the car with no masking as the trim edges will make a break line for it and it will just peel off where you don't want it.

Here's something to possibly think about for the trims. What about electro-plating. I know they are plastic and not sure if it would work but wonder if anyone has done it before and if it does it would give a lot more choice as to colours and finish?

looks pretty good, my window trims are all milky too.. could be a cheap way to apply "black optics" !?!

EDIT - the black spray is a matte black, looks like you would then have to add the plasti dip glossifier to give it a shiny finish

You can chrome plate plastic using an electroplating process, but its expensive and being out in the weather will do exactly the same to what's happened now...


I'm going to look at getting some 3m 1080 vinyl it's the same as the 3m carbon vinyl in the way you can heat it and stretch it and mold it really easy and it will retain that shape...BUT it comes in a load of cool finishes, Matt black, gloss black, metallic black, brush black aluminium, brushed titanium etc... Also do the carbon fibre but in gloss finish if that tickles your fancy

Sounds like a plan. My old 1999 a6 avant had the chrome and that was all fine but the roof rails were the bain of my life. I even contemplated going at them with some wet and dry as nothing else touched them. I used the wet and dry with great success to clean off the misting and yellowing on the headlights so thought it might work but never got round to it before I sold the car. Would be nice to find a decent reasonably priced solution for this before it drives us all mad!

I have some 1080 vinyl coming, I will post pics of the different finishes once it arrives, I am tempted by plastidip.... But worried about it getting pulled or damaged though washing or scratching...

This 1080 is designed purely for automotive... Sticks well without primer, stretches and molds with heat also has air channels in that you can't see to let air out so its practically impossible to get bubbles under it
