If you don't like how far your Milltek sticks out...

Post by Aldouk » Wed Nov 17, 2010 4:34 pm

Hi Guys

Well I didn't like how far my Millteks stuck out from the rear bumper so I cut down the tailpipes.
For anyone who would like to do this .. this is what I did (I take no responsability for anyone messing up their exhaust after following my method)

Remove the tailpipe (one bolt on the exhaust clamp)
Using an angle grinder with a metal grinding disc (NOT cutting disc as they won't last 5 mins when grinding) grid off the outside layer of pipe.
You'll find that it's made up of the inner pipe which is internally welded to the tail and an outer pipe which has the slots cut into it (see pic showing the start of the process where you can see the edge of the inner pipe exposed)
You need to do this carefully so as not to grind into the inner pipe.
Once the outside pipe is off you need to file the inner weld to make it smooth and then finally cut new groves with a cutting disc and then re-fit with exhaust joint compound and the clamp.
The other pic shows one already done for comparison.

I think it looks MUCH better like this.
Hope this helps

Err - my Milteks stick out as far as your modified one. They were fitted new by AMD just under a year ago...

As per above post - the Miltek comes in several pieces, so it is usually possible to adjust the system on the car to bring in the tailpipes as much as you need to. It is common for them to 'grow' by as much as 2" when hot, so the normal approach is to fit them flush with the bumper when cold.

My system is pushed forward on all joints as far as it will go and still stuck out too far by approx 1.5" (when cold)
Having done a search I've found that lots of people have moaned about Millteks sticking out too far which is why I posted.
Hopefully it will help someone :)
