S4 B7 option and sevicing advice needed

Post by Rustydonkey » Tue Aug 04, 2009 8:53 pm

Hi all,

I am soon looking to buy a B7 S4 avant. I have a few question about servicing and options.

What is the difference between satellite navigation and satellite navigation plus?

What is the difference between Xenon, Xenon plus and adaptive lights?

Do they need a cam belt changing or is it chain and when should that be changed?

Who are the best independents around the Midlands for servicing?

Thanks for any replies in advance.

I will try and answer your questions..

The Satellite Navigation is either RNS-D or RNS-E, RNS-D systems are CD based and RNS-E are DVD based, not sure about xenon v xenon plus but the adaptive lights allegedly help you see round corners as they turn with the steering wheel. Engines are cam chain so don't need changing unless you have problems.

I have heard good things about MRC Tuning who are not too far away I believe.

Hope this helps..

As above, not sure about the xenon plus lights? I'm from the midlands and just booked my car into MRC in sept. There's also Unit 20 but i've not used them myself.

Is RSN-D or RSN-E superior to the other?

RNS-E is the latest version. This is the DVD-based sat nav, and has a bigger screen. This one also has slots for SD cards if you want to play your MP3s.

Xenon Plus gives you xenon on main beam.
B7 is like this, I suspect B6 isn't

Not quite correct. The OP wanted to know the difference between "Audi Navigation", and "Audi Navigation plus". The latter 'plus' variant includes a double-DIN head unit with an integrated colour screen and optical drive (for the navi discs), along with a colour DIS. However, the non-plus variants do NOT have the colour display in the head unit, do not have a colour DIS, and use a boot-mounted optical drive. The non-plus units have the navi controls in the centre console between gear lever and handbrake, whereas the 'plus' variants have the navi controls integrated into the head unit.

And on the B7 S4, the RNS-D wasn't available, only the RNS-E.

Correct on the adaptive.

For clarity, the B6 S4 just had 'Xenons' - these are a fix beam dipped xenon light, and the main beam supplements the xenon dip with a H7 halogen main. For European use, you need the proper Audi external beam benders.

On the B7 S4 (just like the remainder of the B7 range), the xenons were 'Xenon Plus' - these are also known as 'bi-xenon'. A sole single xenon source is used for both dipped and main beam - the dipped beam is formed by a moveable mask behind the glass lens. For Euro use, no external beam benders are required, but either a trip to the stealer, or a tweak with VAG-COM to enable 'tourist mode' will sort it - and again on return.

Adaptive lights are an add-on to 'Xenon Plus'

But quality oil, changed regularly (ie, NOT on LongLife), is really the best practice for long chain life. It is usually the tensioners which fail, down to inadequate oil supply.

Damn, I feel like I just failed my 11+ exam...still live and learn.

Any other little gems we should know about regarding the B6/7 S4 cars?
