Hi just wanted a bit of advice .......

I bought a 2004 B6 S4 Avant (45000 mls) from an independant garage which I paid top money for, low mileage etc.., it is a lovely car in great condition. 3 weeks and 2 days after I picked the car up it wouldnt start one evening, I tried both keys etc... Next day got it towed to Teesside Audi who put it on the computer and tell me there are numerous faults but the most common one is the reader coil in the ignition barrell. They order the part but tell me it can take up to 5 weeks to come !! Is this normal ??? The guy in the service dept tells me he has never known it take more than a week to come but here I am very nearly 4 WEEKS LATER and the part is still not here !!! The other problem I am having is ... I rang the garage where I got the car because it came with a warranty but who would've guessed the problem is not covered by the warranty. They offered me £100 towards the problem which I am not happy with as the cost at Audi at the moment is £120 for fault analysis and £170 for the part !! After owning the car for 3 weeks and this happening I feel like taking the car back and trying to get my money back !! Does anybody know where I would stand on this matter with the law ???

I had exactly the same thing with mine not long after I got it - turned out to be a duff starter motor which was surprisingly only about £100 exchange from the main dealer.
I was told it's a fairly common fault on S4's as the starter gets cooked by the exhausts.

If the fault code suggests the reader coil ie fault code suggests the ecu is blocked? Symptoms for this will be the engine will start and run for a few seconds, then cut out?

The dealer will have to have this cut to match your key number, this can take a week of so. This will retain one key for all locks. You can buy a non specific lock barrel and reader coil. The reader coil can be removed from the barrel very carefully and the new one can be fitted with out changing the lock barrel.

This is probably something a main dealer would not do...............

I don't believe the garage is being reasonable, I would write to them (recorded delivery) stating that the vehicle is faulty and that they should pay the full costs of the repairs.

Once the problem is fixed, send them the bill (Audi will print a duplicate invoice), if they don't pay up take them to the small claims court.

Hope this helps but a £290 bill from Audi is quite low, these are not cheap cars.
