Hi folks

just a quick question or 2...

a)
how would these 2 engines compare for economy mpg
b) servicing costs... how much are the timing chains to replace? set up or whatever is done with chain timing.
c) any known issues with these V8's please?

what would an 04 plate 43k mileage engine need apart from an Audi pre delivery inspection service please?
it has a paddly shift auto box on this one... any probs with such a gearbox

cheers folks

MPG is about 18 around town and up to 23 long dirves.
Don't think anything has to be done with the chain until 100k i think? and that will be mega bucks!
If you have a scroll through this section you won't find many post's about faults. The only thing that pop's up the most is the timing chain noise.

Agree with everything Chucky79 says above.

With regards to the timing chain, I have been told that most cars have a slight rattle on the timing chain when the engine is started from cold, after it has been left over night. This is the hydraulic tensioners repressurising with oil, as the oil can slowly leak out over night. (Mine does it in the morning for about 1-2 seconds) and I have been told this is normal. However, if it continues to whine loudly at 1400-2800 revs then this is another issue (see other threads).

I haven't had mine long and I can't compare it with the B5 RS4, but the low end torque is immense and the sound of the V8 is addictive. However, I'm already looking out for a Milltek to get more sound out of it!

Best of luck.

Are you actually thinking of swapping the RS for the S? The engine in the S4 is beautiful but you will hate it compared to the RS. The power delivery is meant to be really different, S4 is so smooth you don't feel like you are going fast at all where as in the RS it is meant to snap your neck off.
i would love to own both of the cars at the same time (same rs as yours would be perfect!)

thanks for the heads up gents.

No Chunky the RS is staying, the cabrio would replace the 80 cabrio V6, the Aygo and my UrS4. so we would be down to 3 cars, an RS4 B5 S4 cabrio and a Ur quattro.
i only do a few milesa day to work and home so I'd use the WR/RS4 in the summer while Helen would use the cabrio which is something she has always liked. We had a 2.5TDI V6 cabrio back in '03 but sold it after a year for an S3, then that lasted 2 years for an EOS tdi which lasted 4 months until the roof failed so we binned it back onto the dealer then I found the RS4 @ Fontains.....
our circumstances changed with Helens job so her mileage was drastically reduced now She is back up here and not based south of the border, so having cars with a thurstier appitite is now within our limits for feeding it 8) :D :D

I would say the B6 S4 is about as good as Audi's come, judging by what I read about the B7 RS4. Because the B6 S4 has no FSi, no DRC, no turbo's and no cambelts. All the things people seem to have problems with?

As for performance around the Nurburgring,

8:29 --- 145.697 km/h -- Audi S4 4.2 Avant, 344 PS/1826 kg (sport auto 11/03)
8:25 --- 146.851 km/h -- Audi RS4, 375 PS/1675 kg (sport auto 10/00)
7:58 --- 156.652 km/h -- Audi RS4 4.2 V8 FSI, 420 PS/ 1650 kg, Frank Stippler.

The S4 hold's it's head up well, dispite being a bit of a lard arse.

As a foot note, I bought mine new in 2004 and it has only just turned 30,000. Ever since the B7 RS4 came out, I've been tempted to change. But after what I've read on here, I'm glad I never did. I've just paid £20,000 of my mortgage instead, so now I'm keeping the B6.
