exhaust valve control

i have the back boxes from a v8 s4 which have the vacume valve,
does this simply operate on the engine vacume or is it like the dual length intake manfold which have a accumalator and a solenoid valve to opperate after 4000rpm?i know the valve does what ever its suppose to do above and below 1700rpm
my engine is a 4.2 abz in a coupe quattro, looking to mount the boxes just infront of the rear wheels for a nice side exit
