Air con issue

Noticed this post browsing the RS4 forum:

I've always been troubled by the same issue on my B6 - with the system set to auto, the fans (or at least the air flow) increase with speed; even setting the fan speed to minimum, the air flow into the cabin is always uncomfortably fast at motorway speeds. Up 'til finding that post, and then driving my brother's '06 330 Sport last night (in which, at speed, with the system on auto, there is very little air flow once the set temp. has been reached), I'd assumed it was an Audi characteristic, but it seems it may actually be a fault. Anyone else's B6/7s do this?

Oh and as a sideline, the 330, whilst pretty rapid (we've had a few playful drags), actually felt substantially less planted to the road than the S4 - sure, there's more feel on turn in, but you just can't beat the Audi's 4-wheel drive stability that gives you so much more handling confidence. The 330's also surprisingly cosseted, meaning on the motorway it's supremely comfortable (much less wind/tyre noise than the S4), but on acceleration (now that I've got used to the V8 rumble), it sounded, well, pretty pathetic  Dash is awful too, but the sports seats are exceptionally good; much better, stronger & more comfortably positioned head restraint than the S4.

I would say that yours has a problem.
I do not experience the same problem in mine (also S4 B6).

As these modules are the same in all A4 (including S4,RS4), if there is an issue on some from production, we can expect to notice it on various models.

Ask to your garage to check it.

I think it depends on perception but having owned loads of Audis' (incl two B6 S4's currently) I agree that the volume of air coming into the cabin when travelling quickly is too much. I turn down the face vents but all it does is shove the air out of the vent on top of the dash and increase the sound materially.

The other annoying thing is that even when the air flow is set manually it still overides automatically.

FWIW my current D3 A8 does not have the problem so perhaps Audi are learning.

I've had my B6 for three years now and never had a problem with Climate Control. The fan does increase for a short while when you use the windscreen washers but that is intentional I'm sure.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Tony - you mean after you use the washers? Yes, as I learnt way back when on this forum somewhere, the air flow is cut during washer use to stop any odour coming through into the cabin, and then the system will try & reach the desired temp again, meaning air flow will increase for a short while.

This is the difficulty (and Merlot I think you've hit the nail on the head with reference to "perception") - varying thoughts on it. Reading the RS4 post, it looks like it's a fault, but then reading these replies it seems it may well be simply an Audi characteristic. I'm probably more prone to notice it than most because 80% of my 50,000 miles a year is done on m/ways.

Next time she's in for service I'll mention it's an annoyance - I'll let you know their reply.

Are you sure you have a pollen filter in there? I have experienced this but only when I removed the pollen filter, it seriousely restricts airflow.

I'm pretty sure I have Rob, yes (put it this way - my car's always serviced at main dealer & checking that filter's part of the standard service isn't it?).

When you say "restricts", this is more the opposite problem - too fast...

Yep but I assume if you don;t have a filter in there the the air flow is not restricted so much....not the cause anyway as you have a filter in place.
