Fuel consumption

Post by dickyd » Wed Jun 05, 2013 6:21 pm

Recently went on a round trip to Devon, around 547 miles. Used remaining fuel driving around town so totalled around 657 miles before filling up again. Worked out mpg which came to a eager 15.7 mpg!!! I was very careful on the long run a basically cruised at around 75 mph with just a couple of bursts. The S4 is thirsty I know, but I really expected a much better mpg than this especially in view of the long run which was mostly motorway driving. Appreciate any thoughts or ideas on how I can get better performance out of what is a terrific car. Black S4 saloon 6 years old around 51400 miles.

Thanks
Paul

I filled up, I drove from Exeter to MRC, 190 miles. Used nearly a full tank. Filled up at Tesco near MRC, re-mapped and drove home, filled up again when back in Exeter as it was low. Call it 400 miles, 2 tanks of fuel. Haha

I get 13 mpg around town

Ps 657 miles on 63 ltrs is 47mpg which is mental haha :bigblink:

My best is 142 miles from full to the dis beeping saying I had 35 miles left until empty. Felt quite proud of that as it was just after having my exhaust modded so it was down to gentle use :bigblink:

Woah, there's something not right there !
I get an average of 22 MPG and that's with spirited driving.
I recently went to Le Man and from Newcastle I got 350 odd miles to a tank. That's my record.

I would check out your fuel trims with Vag-Com or via a dealer. They must be way out.
Have you had the lambda sensors changed, at all? They're only good for 70-80 thousand miles and they control the fueling.

There's defo' something not right with your car - check the fuel trims first.

Regards, Chris.

Agreed. MW cruising 70-80 will easily yield 24mpg. That will include several WOT moments and the odd blast beyond 3 figures. The above without WOT and 3 figures will get me 26mpg tops.

That 15.7 mpg figure is insane!
I've seen just shy of 30mpg mincing up and down the motorways in mine (legal speeds, cruise on), its an auto which is allegedly slightly easier on consumption.
Round town is a totally different story though..

There was a hint of humour when I said 142 was my best. I normally average between 290 and 340 to a tankful.

Here's my technique for getting in excess of 30mpg on a motorway

Boot it up hills until you reach a speed your uncomfortable at, then tickle it over the top and coast it downhill in gear. Tickle it along the flats and watch well ahead of you so you never have to brake.

Works for me, then you have more fuel to 'play', I find my B6 more economical and smoother on the BP Ultimate

I had my S4 converted to LPG, about £37 in gas gets me on average 240 miles. You lose a bit of power but its also switchable between gas and petrol so if I want a bit of fun switch it over to petrol and it feels quicker. I couldn't recommend it enough especially if you do a lot of miles like myself.

I loved my B7 S4 but I still shudder when I think about how much fuel I used to get through. My B8 gives me nearly 300 miles per 55 litre fill up which is about 100 more miles than my B7!
Still miss that noise though!
