What is it?

Noticed the other day sitting behind the lower part of my front grill towards the lefthand side is a little metal box with some plugs on it?

Does anyone know what it is and what it does please?
Current car: 2007 BMW 530d touring.
Previous car: 2005 S4 B7.

That might be the A/C switch (I know it's behind the bumper). I'm not sure though.
Audi S4 Avant (B6, 2004) in Goodwood Green.

It's about 3 or 4 inches in size and looks like a mini ecu with plugs on the end.
