Newbie about to buy 2003 s4 avant
Hi, just about to do the deed and buy 2003 nogaro blue manuel s4 (leaving bmw diesel touring).
Can I have any tips of what to look out for?
Plus points: understated looks, awesome power, precise handling, practical (ish for 2 kids)and hopefully the heavy depreciation is over.
Negatives: not sure about colour, mpg, perhaps not as involving to drive as m3 (sorry!), depreciation may continue to slide.

Well I got my S4 Avant (same year) back in January and am still grinning ear to ear every time I drive it.
I have 2 young kids (both in car seats still), so the practicallity is definitely there (along with the Avant boot space of course!). Depreciation is still there though. Paid £30k for mine only 10 mnths ago and dealer prices are now around£4k lower, although the big curve is now gone.
With regards MPG, depends on your driving. Take it easy on the motorway and expect around 23-24 to the gallon. Push it (which is kind of the point of having it!) and you'll get more like 17 or 18 - or on a trackday expect about 12
With regards to driver involvement, depends what you are used to. Sure the M3 is a lot more fun if you like ripping your tyres to pieces sliding the back end out on corners and the like and possibly on a track, but the S4 is bliss and will carry you in speed AND comfort as well as giving you a far superior drive to most other cars on the market.

All very well put...I had a B5 S4 Avant when they first came out and the B6 S4 Avant as soon as that came out...well worth it. On days like today I am amazed at the traction the thing has compared with the rear wheel drive stuff that I have owned.
Maserati GranTurismo GTS Auto, S3 Sportback, TT2 3.2 Roadster, Disco3 for the heavy stuff.

Blast, hit slight cash flow problem, deal delayed until end of month. No rattles on start up, but understand if engine not run for week or so then there may a slight one as oil cannot defy gravity.

Just bought a 2004 S4 Avant and am living it! Thinking of leaving the missus and seeing if the church will acceptt this as an offical marriage. Gosh shes beautiful and a joy to spend time with, gorgeous looks, sex on a stick but gosh it hurt when I tried to stick my C**k up her exhaust pipes! LOL
Well done on your purchase and welcome to the HAPPY club.
