Hi All,
I have an S4 B6 convertible 2004 with the MK1 RNS-E. Very happy with this unit, I have the SD cards running my MP3 tracks and the CD Multi-changer in the glovebox. So generally all is good. I am very very keen to keep my lovely S4 as standard as I can, but I have 2 things I would like to sort on the RNS-e to make it 100% for me and am hoping you could advise…
1. The Original Sat Nav DVD I have with the car but it does need upgrading. It’s some 10 years old now so the guidance suffers from not having newer roads etc. I have ordered one of the 2013 DVD’s off of Ebay which is for my RNS-e etc. Do I simply plug this into the unit and let it do its stuff? Is there anything I need to do or any prior back up or anything?
FYI The disk I have got is this one:

2. When I start the car up the start up screen just says Audi MMI for a few seconds… I have been reading elsewhere that this can be re-programmed/changed to an S4 welcome screen? Can anyone advise how to do this?
Would really appreciate any help or advice.
Thanks
Ben

Re: RNS-E update in S4 B6
If the disc you have bought it not genuine then it will wear out the laser of your unit.
Re: RNS-E update in S4 B6
I got the disk today and installed it - It works perfectly.
I have heard one or two queries similar to what you mention above Hyfr. Thank you for the feedback. My fairly detailed understanding of the different classes of lasers and how they work with regards to DVD's and CD's etc has me siding on this being inaccurate. If anything was to "Wear out" it is much more likely to be the disk. the class one lasers in DVD and CD units, while not impossible to fail, the main factor in this is the amount of time it is in use much more than the effect of the disk it is reading. I will be doing less than 7K miles p.a and only use the Sat Nav for a small percentage of those. I have SD cards running my MP3 music and a 6 disk CD changer in the glovebox so do not use the head unit for CD play. I would like to think that the laser is going to last a while longer yet (Its 10 years old already). should it need replacing in the future I will probably retrofit the Mk2 RNS-E.
For now I am really pleased to have the 2013 Sat Nav maps, upgraded FW and camera notification on the new disk
Cheers

Re: RNS-E update in S4 B6
ok, so maybe my terminology is incorrect, but i bet you in time, you will have issues with it being slow and unresponsive as the unit struggles to read the disc ...

I'm no expert on the way the RNS-E works but I believe it's in use all the time, whether you're using the navigation or not. Certainly if there's a problem with the laser or the nav disc the whole unit malfunctions.

Out of interest, where is the best place to get a up to date 'genuine' disc other than Audi?
