Looking to join the S4 Club

Post by honkifyou » Sun May 04, 2014 4:49 pm

Hi all,

I am currently driving a 2009 Seat Leon FR TDi and looking to upgrade to an Audi S4. I know that is a big leap especially when it come to fuel consumption. I've never owned an Audi let alone a high performance one. So I am looking for some advise on what to look for when purchasing one? I am obviously aware of all the standard things to look for when buying a second hand vehicle but I am unsure if there is anything specific I should be looking for with such a high performance vehicle.

Any help and advise would be awesome.

Many thanks.

First of all check you can afford one; by this I mean insurance and fuel costs. The servicing costs probably won't pinch your wallet too much than what you have but going from a small-ish Turbo-Diesel to a large-ish petrol engine will hurt firstly on insurance and secondly at the pump. Few, if any, 4.2 S4's make much over 30mpg unless they are on a trailer - that's the simple reality. The tiptronics can be marginally more efficient due to a differently geared final drive ratio but it's almost a six and two threes.

Secondly, what shape are you after? Saloon, Cabriolet or Avant? In the big mechanical scheme of things they are similar but each have certain things to look for.

The engines have an (IMHO) slightly undeserved timing chain reputation which with a change of oil and service regime can be obviated; the bodies are galvanised and solid; the performance is pretty good and un-fussy; the interiors have some weak areas but in comparison to it's peers is still pretty damn good.
