Might go for that myself...I take it they had to remove the whole exhaust (cat-back)?

Didn't need to remove the exhaust. Just cut out the middle box and welded in two bits of straight through pipe. No gains in power and wouldn't expect any tbh but no losses either just a bit more noise. Makes me grin still ever time I go near the throttle.

Best cheap exhaust mod = piggies
Gut the precats on the stock downpipes.
Mate it to a used catback (milltek frankly sucks for performance so try for something that is 2.5 with an xpipe like fast Intentions or magnaflow)
Should be around 500-600 quid, and about 25hp/25tq

Unfortunately they neck down to 2.25 to mate up with the choking milltek catback.
You can have a good exhaust shop cut the neck down and weld in some 304 stainless 2.5, and get a 2.5 catback.
Returning to stock would be easy no matter what way you go as people are always looking for these parts. You could frankly find a set of stock downpipes and gut the precats on them if you wanted. Then sell them separately when you sell the car.
A jhm tune would tie this all together nicely. The combo of 2.5 catless downpipes, a fast Intentions 2.5 exhaust and a jhm tune is generally good for about 40hp and 40-45 tq. Those are at the crank, not the wheels.
On acceleration terms, my car went from a 13.8 @ 101 quarter mile when it was stock to 12.99 @ 107.8. For perspective, in a race over this distance that would mean an 8 car length advantage for the modified car over the stock car.

The tune cones with launch assist which is nice too...and this will give you an idea for the full 2.5 catless + intentions sound.

Here's a 0-60 mph test for you. I used a gtech pro and a race logic performance box and came up with 4.4-4.5 pretty consistently with one foot of rollout. 4.6-4.7 without the rollout
basically the car was equal to a healthy b7 rs4 with no carbon. I know this because I now have a b7 rs4

I see what you're saying going 2.5 but I can't see me changing the miltek now. Had I looked into it before hand I might have gone 2.5 all the way but I didn't really consider looking for more power then.

So would I not gain much with 2.5 DP's and 2.25 cat back? Also how bad is the smell? I read a post on another forum with the guy saying he could no longer drive his kids about because of the health risk!!

With the middle box removed did you notice any loss or gain in power torque?

I had the middle box replaced with an H pipe today and I must say it seems like a really good mod. The car is only slightly louder but it sounds so much more angry when you boot it...
I've had loads of aftermarket exhausts on many cars and I must admit I've never noticed massive power gains but I can really notice the car seems to rev more freely with the centre box gone- wasn't expecting it to at all...
Great bit of advice to get this done if you don't wang to she'll out for a full system or want to keep your car closer to stock..

I'm not sure if there is any power difference with mine but wouldn't expect it tbh. It does seem to rev a bit smoother now and went for my first tunnel run yesterday through the left Dartford tunnel. OMFG! It sounded bloody awesome. 2nd gear and just floored it and you also get a nice pop as change gear too. Well well chuffed.
