Smelly B6 S4

Post by RoyalMile » Sun Jun 03, 2012 10:31 pm

Well hello all

It's been around 10 months since I acquired my Avant Tiptronic and it has been my daily drive for the last 10K miles. Apart form the usual (intermittent) startup rattle, there has been little to report. There is one thing I'd like to investigate, and that is the smell from the front of the car. It's like crank-case fumes and is quite obvious after parking the car at the end of a reasonable length drive of 10 miles or more. When I fire up the car again when it's still warm, I get the fumes through the front vents but it goes once the car is moving. I know these cars are prone to valve cover gasket leaks and I'm wondering if this is the most likely cause. During my ownership, the oil has been changed once by Audi, It is due again now. The car has had no top-ups and the level is still towards the top of the dip-stick ok area since the last change 5K miles ago. If I drive from Southampton to Edinburgh, the smell after I park is no worse than a local drive. There's no smell when the engine's cold.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Steve

Yeah that'll be your rocket cover gaskets. I just did the nearside. Offside seemed fine so I left it.

Personal preference and probably me being over cautious, but I did mine to coincide a week before the oil change just to be double safe.

Thanks

I'll ask the dealers to have a look when it's in for the oil change.

I had to have my rocker cover gaskets replaced too, it could also be a leaking aux rad too, they can smell a bit speaking from experience. All fixed now though with no problems.

That's a good point, I've heard those rads can be a problem on the S4.

It's booked in for the oil service next week - no doubt they'll tell me I need gaskets and rads!

Thanks again
