Tyre choices for the B6
Tyre choices for the B6
Hi lads I have just picked up a B6 S4 Avant and although the car is immaculate it has been fitted with 235/40/18 Falken Tyres, now I am not saying the Falkens are no good but as far as I can see the Falkens are at the budget end of the performance Tyre market so given the cars performance I would rather fit something a little more suitable
Can anyone make any suggestions on good Tyres for the car ??
And is 235/40/18 the optimum tyre size ?

Re: Tyre choices for the B6
nothing wrong with Falken 452's, the 912's are not so good from what I've heard on other forums.
If you want the ones that come from the factory, Continentals are factory fit on the RS4

Well I went for a blast into the yorkshire dales today and I must say theres nowt wrong with them tyres, I cant say the same about the missus crying in the passenger seat though

Re: Tyre choices for the B6
Sorry to build on the know it all reputation
but I use 452's and I'm on my 2nd set now and really like them, a good well priced all rounder. Stable, progressive in the wet and dry and cheap, what more could you want?

Re: Tyre choices for the B6
Don't know what price the Falkens are, but I paid £450 for 4 BF Goodrich last April (same production line as Michelins), and have had no issues with them - wearing well and excellent grip. The S4 came with new Avons which were also fine.

Re: Tyre choices for the B6
Falken 452's are decent tyres, I had them on my S4 on 19" Sportec mono's. Only thing negative about them is that they were a fair bit noisier than the Goodyear F1's I ran previous to them on the same rim. Equal dry grip, less wet grip than the F1's and only a few k miles less longevity than the F1's (19K to 17k)
Re: Tyre choices for the B6
That's a good point, the 452's do have a fair bit of road noise, they aren't really bad but they do make more noise than my winter tyres. I'll still keep buying them though.
Re: Tyre choices for the B6
Hancooks is the way to go - premium tyre but usually cheaper than Contis etc. Always comes very high in the proper tyre tests.
I got 4 235/40/18s for £460, a month in and they are better than my old Contis!

Due to a problem with the tracking I now have to replace my front two BF Goodrich's (see my post on 16 Jan) - after only 5/6000 miles

1. Can I get away with just changing 2 tyres?
2. Should I suffer the price differential with the Goodrichs, or will the Hancooks be fine?
Not had a Quattro before, so unsure if the rule is to change all four, or if axle by axle is acceptable?

Re: Tyre choices for the B6
I would say Hancooks will be as good if not better - my experience so far is excellent with an S4 running decent power.
As for axle by axle, I would say it's fine to change 2 fronts and leave the rears if they are still OK.

Re: Tyre choices for the B6
Vredestein ultrac sessanta has worked fine for me so far. Even wear and they seem okay. Been on so long I can't remember how the Bridgestones from before compared. Down to about 4>5mm all round, so will soon be time to swap...
Re: Tyre choices for the B6
I'm just on my 2nd set of Sessanta's and love them. I considered Goodyear Eagle F1s but then thought, what's the point, I'm happy with the Vreds. They wear even and pretty well considering the weight of the car and the abuse they get.

Mind if I ask, what did you pay a corner? Presuming your on standard 235/40/r18 95y?xyber wrote:I'm just on my 2nd set of Sessanta's and love them. £158 for 225/35/19 from mytyres. Oponeo was the next cheapest as £162. Apparently that size is now on 6 week back order almost everywhere aswell, so I got in just in time

Re: Tyre choices for the B6
I had Falken 452 on an E36 M3 Evo and thought they were excellent.
MY S4 has got, and came with from Audi dealer, new Prestivo tyres all round whatever they are. Wasn't keen but they wouldn't change them as they are new. So we'll wait and see.
