Hi. I had my S4 stolen back in Feb. The Insurance Company declared it a loss after 1 week, therefore if and when it was recovered, it belonged to them. They settled with me and I have bought another car. I very much doubt you can refuse to have it back, as in some way it would cost the Insurance Company. I would also suggest that if you left your keys in the manner you did, it would give them sufficient ammo to void your policy.
It will surely be recorded as Stolen Recovered and you will still have to declare it on future quotes. If you dont, the new insurance company will know as they are all linked to the same database, refuse your insurance and then you will have to declare that also for the next 5 yrs.
I had protected no claims and my insurance company double my premium from £500 to £1024! regardless of the NCB. I dumped them and have gone with another well known company and managed to get it down to £500 again even with the declaration.
If you claim also, you will lose that years NCB, but if you have well over 9yrs, it wont matter much anyway as most insurance companies only recognise 9yrs as a maximum anyway.
Its a crap situation; I went through it for many months, Insurance, Police, Forensics etc etc and it plays on your mind. S4's / RS4's are becoming the car of choice the police tell me. Very fast 4dr, big boot car. I have since been asked to go to the Police to identify many images of S4's they have which have been involved in something or another.
I hope you get a positive result.
