RS4 Engine...?

Post by tartan_rob » Wed Feb 25, 2009 12:51 am

I have a mate who is torn between the S4 and RS4. He wants the RS4 power but will not go past Tiptronic. Has anyone thought about transplanting an RS4 engine into the S4?

I suppose MRC could Map the box to cope with the increased revs.

What about a s4 with a super charger ..... Much more power than a rs4..

Not 100% it will that straight forward. Although they are very similar engines the RS4 block sits higher with respect to the S4 so I assume it is installed lower in the RS4. Also the ECU are completely different. 2x in the RS4, 1x in the S4 so I am not sure if mapping the box is an option. MRC would know for sure.

If he is adamant on a Tip get him to buy the S4, replace the precats with piggies, ECU map, install the RS4 RARB and bobs your uncle. Performance wise it will be below the RS4 but is will be much better than a stock S4.

SC is an option too...I suppose whatever is cheaper. MRC talking about a 2.7 engine transplant, the downside is that we getting away from the V8. I know the 2.7 is glorious but the V8 noise is in a different league.....

I think the effort of putting an RS4 engine into an S4 with tiptronic transmission is really not worth the extra 70HP IMHO, suspect the result would only be as quick as a manual S4. If the transmission is the over-riding priority then go for the S4 with mods described above, the S4 handling is not as sharp as the RS so the solution seems to be the best option in terms of driver experience.

I would also add the S4 is no slouch itself, from a rolling start against an RS4 mine did not disgrace itself :D

Much more than a B6S4 is worth.

Stage 3 AMD remap and a miltek is 390+ so it won't be million miles away.

Around the ring a B6S4 Avant is less than 2 seconds a mile behind the B7 RS4 so if you're on public roads it's not going to matter anyway. You've only got to be a slightly better driver, and and he's going nowhere.

The PES supercharger is 6,495 Dollars. Web site is http://www.pes-tuning.com/
There's quite a few S4's that have been done and one of the first development vehicles was a 2005 S4 B6 Cab, so it's well tested.

Hang on - i thought the B6 S4 usually produces about the sort of power that's expected, round 330/340bhp, whereas a lot of B7 RS4s produce less power than expected, around 360/370bhp.

So really what we're talking about, potentially, is only 35hp or thereabouts?
