Suspension & Wheel Setup

Post by ShaneyB » Thu Oct 16, 2008 9:39 pm

Hi All,
Thinking of making some mods to my standard S4 saloon.

I can't make up my mind if I should go for 19" wheels and an H&R setup or stick with 18" + H&R. I want the car to handle well but also not too harsh a ride.

I am also considering a Stage 2+ MRC remap/Milltek. Anyone had this and what is your feedback? Had the remap on my B5 which was excellent but I know the power gains on the B6 are not as high. Is it worth it? Does the Milltek make the car sound a bit 'lad-ish'?

Any advice welcome as always.
Shane

A reply below to a similar suspension question a few days ago.
In addition I fitted a Milltek and a APR re-map much improved over standard.

I looked at this when I had my B6 S4.

The standard suspension is a very good all round set up, very slightly under damped is the only issue for track use. On Castle Coombe during ADI the car felt good only slightly "bouncy" on the fast corner after the start fininsh line.

I when the anti-roll bar route and a set of light 8.5x19 BBS LM`s, perfect.

If the lowered ride hight look is needed, you will have to do some front arch work if running 235/35x19 tyres

I fitted the H+R B7 RS4 set, front and rear.

Bit of a go-kart after, still had the oem ride quality.

How big is the H&R rear ARB compared to the OEM Rs4 rear ARB? Same question for the fronts. Are you able to get a set? If so PM the total costs please.

Thanks in advance

I want the combination of looks, handling and ride comfort. Should I look at 19's or as mentioned previously does arch work need to be carried out.

On the remap side I'll stick with MRC as they did a great job on my B5.

Phil, can you send me costs for the suspension and fitting please?

Some info for you.

The Eibach coilover kit for the B6 is £699.99 supply only.

Not sure on the exact spec of the H+R anti rollbars, there may be some web based info around. Price is £299.99 from memory,

So from experience which manufacturer would be better? I had Eibach (springs only) on my B5 and it looked excellent but the handling wasn;t great.

Most of the leading brands offer similar levels of performance, only when you go for the top end Ohlin and smilar you enter a different league and price too.

Don`t really think it is fair to judge a brand/product on just a spring set. If you fit any uprated springs on to oe dampers the car, you will not get the best from the spring.

Any case it may be better to give me a ring to chat about the options

My B6 S4 has the full Milltek and the Revo remap. I'm not sure I'd bother with the remap (marginal difference as far as I can tell) again, but I'm very happy with the Milltek. The standard S4 was just a bit too quiet for me, and now I can make the most of that beautiful V8 rumble! I went for the quieter version (think this is the "resonated" one, but not certain so check before buying). At low revs it's just a low rumble and so you don't feel a complete knob when driving down a busy high street etc, but when you give it some revs the sound is awesome but not overbearing for the driver. I imagine it probably sounds a bit louder to the cars that I overtake though:)

There is a video which gives a fairly good idea of the sound at:

If you're ever anywhere near High Wycombe or Reading I'd be happy to let you hear mine.

Just having a look at the milltek stuff.if you choose the hi-flow cat assembly (which is about 1100 pounds),does that include the full system, centre section and tailpipes aswell or is that just for the cats themselves?....then you buy the system (which is another 600 pounds) on top of that?
im a little confused!!lol
From what ive gathered from reading the forums (and im certainly no expert!!) wouldnt it be beneficial to have a remap after you put an exhaust system on,just to get everything flowing right etc?
And whats an ARB?haha

For the full system you need both the hi-flow cats and the cat-back. That's what I've got. I expect the cat-backs on their own would make a big difference to the sound. In theory, the cats are supposed to make more of a performance difference (but, at least on my subjective assessment, I'm not convinced). I gather that most people just go for the cat-backs, rather than spending nearly £2K on the whole lot.

I had my remap done first. Then followed up with the exhaust a month or two later. I asked Fontain if they needed to make any adjustments to the remap once the new exhaust was on and they said not. This seems to make sense to me, as the Revo is just a re-chip, and isn't tuned to any particular S4 engine's characteristics. In other words, they just slap it in and there's no fiddling about on a rolling road to "tune" it.

I do now wish that I'd put it on a rolling road before and after. It did seem to make a difference at first but looking back it might just have been that the fantastic noise made me more enthusiastic about exploring the upper limit of the rev range! Now that I've got used to it just seems "normal", i.e. I'm back yearning for an RS4 again:)

Cheers John,
The remap on my old B5 made a massive difference (56bhp) but I see MRC are claiming 30bhp for the B6 which as you say probably isn't worth it for £500+. I just saw their Stage 2+ deal and liked the idea of doing it all together. I may go for Milltek and H&R initially and see how I get on.

I'm also not far from Wycombe so let me know when you're available.

Cheers
