Headlights...

Hi there..

I have a 1999 pre-facelift audi s4... with 2 piece headlights... headlamp and seperate indicators...

I have purchased the new 1 piece headlamps for it... the same as the face lift model... both are xenon type...

Are there any other parts that i need to complete the job... IE- connectors for the wiring... just asking before i start the job...

And do i need to remove the front bumper to do this job... Can i remove the headlamps without taking this off... If i do need to removed it... Whats the procedure... How do i remove the bumper...

Also... On the underside of the new headlights... There is a gap where the ballast should screw into... but since i have new ballasts they wont fit in there due to there difference in size...
I was going to block and seal this off with perpex and fit the ballasts somewhere in the engine bay... Is this okay... and the gap should be blocked off right... because of moisture getting into the lamps...

Please help me with this because i am so looking forward to getting the job done when i get home from work at the weekend..

Cheers
Andy

You will have to cut some metal away from the wings to get the new lights to fit, quite tricky I guess. ScottR has recently done his so he might have more info for you..

I was able to pinch a friend's airsaw which was ideal for the cutting. You will need to remove all of the inner lip which is hidden by the existing indicator. Once you have cut the wing away and have test fitted it, you will need to prime and paint the metal to prevent rusting.

You will need the facelift connectors for the main lights, but you can reuse you existing indicator bits. Because I was in a rush like you, I ended up having my pants pulled down and paying £30 for them from an eBay breakers yard.
I'd recommend calling round some smaller breakers who may happen to have a facelift A4 in and get the connectors from there. Should be able to save yourself over £20.

You won't need to remove the front bumper.

I also got aftermarket HID's and I have fitted my ballasts elsewhere in the engine bay. The passenger side ballast bracket fits quite neatly against the ABS ECU. All you need to do is drill a hole in the brackets so that the ABS ECU bolt goes through it.
The drivers side was perhaps a bit more risky... I've attached mine to the airbox <cue screams of horror>. I made a 'washer' out of rubber which i've sandwiched under the fixing washer to prevent any air from being sucked in passed the bolt. I've also used plenty of threadlock. You don't want one of those bolts being sucked into your turbos!

You would get condensation inside the lamp if you didn't blank off the hole, so perspex and a gluegun should be fine. The easiest solution would be to buy some ballasts which fit in the OEM position.

I have tried everywhere to get my hands on the wiring connector so i can fit the new lamps but i cant find them anywhere... I have tried all of the breakers yards around me... Does anyone have any that i could buy or do you know of any that i could get my hands on...

I would appreciate any help...

Try those robbing swines Motors-In-Motion on eBay. That's who took me to the cleaners for mine.

Did you manage to get your hands on the connectors?

I'm in a similar position now, I've even tried Motors in Motion and they just say "no we don't have them".

Anyone got any ideas?

Have you tried going to a stealership? You might be able to get the plugs on their own.

Failing that, guess you just need to find someone breaking a facelift A4/S4/RS4. Grizz has one from an RS4 he's stripping at the moment. That's one side!

Cheers Blue Thunder, guess I'll have to bite the bullet and try the stealers.

I did get the connectors... Try giving Virdee a pm from on here... He was of great help over the phone with wiring them up as well...

Think they were under £20 for both connectors... You can source the diagram either on here or another audi site...

The lamps made a huge difference to the looks... Good luck with the connectors...
